Wichita 8, Lincoln 1- Box Score
The Wichita Wingnuts (26-17) slugged their way to an 8-1 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs (25-19) on Wednesday.
Wingnuts’ starter, Charles Gillies (4-1), was equally as crucial in the win, giving up just one unearned run while walking none and striking out 11 in eight innings of work.
Wichita took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on solo home runs by John Nester (2) and Ryne Willard (3). Willard hit another solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-0.
The Saltdogs cut the lead to two in the top of the sixth on a T.J. Bennet RBI single, but the Wingnuts answered with an RBI triple by Tony Thomas and an RBI double by Nester in the bottom of the frame. Wichita scored three more in the bottom of the eighth to bring the game to its final score.
Sioux City 13, Winnipeg 6- Box Score
The Sioux City Explorers (35-10) scored 13 runs on 13 hits to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes (21-24) 13-6 on Wednesday.
The game was tied 3-3 before Jose Sermo hit a three-run home run (8) in the bottom of the fifth to put the Explorers in the drivers seat. Sermo picked up another RBI in the bottom of the seventh and later scored as part of the three run inning that made it 9-3. The Explorers added four more in the eighth with three coming on a Jay Baum home run (5).
The Goldeyes scored three in the top of the ninth to bring the game to its final score.
Luis Mateo (7-2) gave up three runs in 6.1 innings of work to earn the win.
Kansas City 3, Sioux Falls 2- Box Score
Nick Torres hit a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to lift the Kansas City T-Bones to a 3-2 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries on Wednesday.
The T-Bones took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but the Canaries managed to tie the game in the top of the sixth on a Mitch Glasser RBI single.
Then, in the second pitch of the next frame, Torres delivered his third home run of the year to secure the win for Kansas City.
T-Bones reliever Joe Filomeno (3-1) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and was awarded the win. Carlos Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save (8).
St. Paul 8, Fargo-Moorhead 5- Box Score
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (21-22) dropped the rubber-match of a three-game series against the St. Paul Saints (24-21) by a score of 8-5.
The St. Paul Saints took a 3-0 lead when Burt Reynolds hit a three run home run (9) in the top of the first inning. The Saints went on to score two in the second and one in the third to make it a 6-1 game. The RedHawks cut the lead to three with back-to-back RBIs by Tim Colwell and Yhoxian Medina in the bottom of the fourth. However, St. Paul answered with a two-run Max Murphy home run to get some insurance in the top of the sixth.
Saints reliever, Jake Matthys (3-3), was awarded the win.
Chicago 5, Gary SouthShore 4 (F-7)- Box Score
The Chicago Dogs (16-28) erased a three-run deficit to defeat the Gary SouthShore Railcats (23-21) 5-4 on Wednesday.
Trey Vavra led the Dogs, delivering a big two-run home run. Randy Santiestiban hit a solo home run of his own for the Railcats.
Chicago’s reliver Tyson Perez (2-2) was awarded the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Kaohi Downing pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save (11).
Texas 6, Cleburne 1- Box Score
The Texas AiHogs (11-31) held the Cleburne Railroaders’ (16-27) offense in check during a 6-1 win on Wednesday.
The Railroaders scored their only run of the game in the second inning against AirHogs’ starter Tyler Matzek (1-5). Matzek was awarded the win after striking out eight in his five innings of one run work.
Stewart Ijames paced the AirHogs offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a triple and an RBI.
