ZIEGLER CLAIMS HITTER OF THE WEEK

DURHAM, NC – The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Wichita Wingnuts 1B CJ Ziegler (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Hitter of the Week.

It is almost impossible to argue with this week’s Pointstreak Hitter of the Week selection. Ziegler hit for the cycle on Wednesday in a 4-for-6 night at Gary SouthShore. The first baseman hit his home run in his first at-bat and got the triple out of the way his second time up. Ziegler doubled in the seventh when the Wingnuts batted around, then finished the cycle with a single in his final at-bat in the ninth.

While Ziegler’s cycle was historic, the first baseman’s home run will also ink his name in the record books. The homer on Ziegler’s cycle night was his 27th of the season, tying the American Association single-season record. The record-tying shot gave Ziegler a streak of three consecutive games with a long ball and he followed that up by breaking the record with home runs on Saturday and Sunday. Ziegler now has 29 home runs on the year, five of which were this week.

The day after Ziegler hit for the cycle, he came through in a big way for the Wingnuts. Ziegler capped a ninth-inning comeback with a go-ahead single, helping Wichita beat the RailCats, 5-4. That big RBI was one of 14 on the week for Ziegler. He also hit .552 over Wichita’s last seven games with two doubles and a triple.
