Winnipeg southpaw Chris Salamida (6-3, 3.20 ERA) continued his stellar 2014 campaign with a complete-game 5-1 victory against Wichita. The complete game was Salamida’s second in three starts. He struck out eight and allowed one earned run on five hits and three walks.

The win helped the Goldeyes avoid a four-game sweep by the Wingnuts and stretched their first-place lead in the North Division to three games after a St. Paul loss.

At the plate, Winnipeg 3B Jake Blackwood led the team with three hits. He scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by CF Reggie Abercrombie in the bottom of the third. In the sixth, C Luis Alen extended the Goldeyes’ lead with a two-run homer. Alen went 2-for-4 in the game. Winnipeg SS Tyler Kuhn and 1B Casey Haerther also had an RBI in the game.

Sioux City DH Peter Barrows crushed a three-run homer in the top of the fourth, bringing home what proved to be the game’s decisive runs in a 9-7 win against St. Paul.

Sioux City jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on a two-RBI single from SS Tommy Mendonca, an RBI double by 3B Amos Ramon and an RBI single by C Dillon Usiak. The Saints tied the game, 5-5, in the bottom of the third, but a four-run fifth inning gave the X’s the lead for good on a sacrifice fly by CF Tim Colwell and Barrows’s homer.

The Explorers were efficient with men on base Sunday, scoring nine runs on eight hits and three walks and stranding just three base runners. Sioux City won the series, taking three of four games from the Saints.

Right-hander Alex Burnett got the win after throwing 3 1/3 innings scoreless in relief. He allowed four hits and struck out two. Closer Chris Bodishbaugh picked up his 11th save of the season in the ninth.

Gary SouthShore 7, Fargo-Moorhead 1Box

RailCats right-hander Morgan Coombs tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits to beat Fargo-Moorhead, 7-1. Coombs struck out seven and walked three in the win, which helped the RailCats split their four-game series with the RedHawks.

Gary SouthShore took the lead in the top of the third, when RF Drew Martinez belted a two-RBI double to right field. The RailCats took a 3-0 lead later in the inning on an RBI single to center field by DH Ryan Babineau.

The RailCats added to the lead in the ninth on an RBI single from Martinez and a three-run homer from 2B Zac Mitchell. Mitchell had a team-high three hits and a stolen base — his 17th of the season.
