SMITH’S TIE-BREAKING RBI SINGLE GIVES SALTDOGS 13TH WIN OF SEASON

Lincoln 5, Salina 4 – Box 

The Saltdogs continued their strong play, winning their 13th game of the season on Saturday. After the Saltdogs took an early 4-1 lead, the Stockade tied the game in the fifth, capped by a RBI single from 1B Kewby Meyer, who recorded three hits on the day and knocked in two runs. The Saltdogs struck back in the seventh, when 1B Curt Smith knocked in the eventual game-winning run on a RBI single. Smith had a huge day at the plate, knocking in four out of the five runs in the victory. 2B Cesar Valera also had a strong game, collecting two hits and scoring three times. RHP J.R. Bunda earned his fourth win of the season, pitching three scoreless innings in relief. RHP Michael Wagner closed out the Stockade in the ninth inning and earned his third save.

Gary 9, Sioux City 7 (10 innings) – Box

The Railcats topped the Explorers in a wild affair on Saturday, as the teams went to extra innings to decide the game. The Explorers scored a run in the top of the tenth to take a 7-6 lead, thanks to a RBI double by CF Jayce Ray, but the Railcats responded in the bottom half of the inning. All three runs were scored on a homer from SS Ryan Fitzgerald who was the hero of the night, leading his team to a walk-off 9-7 win. The long ball was Fitzgerald’s first homer of the season. RF Anthony Cheky Jr. also had a big game in the win, going 2-5 and knocking in two runs. 1B John Nogowski had a four-RBI day in the loss, and went 2-4 to raise his average to .435 for the season. Nine pitchers were used by both teams, with Gary deploying five in the win. RHP Jorge De Leon earned the victory in relief, pitching the final two innings, allowing a run and striking out one for his second win of the year.

Fargo-Moorhead 7, Winnipeg 5 – Box 

A two-run homer by CF Kes Carter powered the Redhawks, as they railed off four runs in the third inning en route to a 7-5 victory over the Goldeyes. DH Mike Schwartz had a big day at the plate, collecting two hits and scoring twice in the victory, in his first game of the season. 1B Mitch Delfino also provided two hits, and he also scored and knocked in a run. RF Josh Romanski hit his sixth home run of the season in the loss. 3B Wes Darvill also drilled a homer, his second long shot of the year. Four pitchers were utilized in the win, with LHP Cesilo Pimentel earning the victory, going 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, and striking out four in his fifth win of the year. RHP Casey Weathers earned the save, his fourth of the campaign.

Cleburne 5, Sioux Falls 3 – Box

The Railroaders avenged a Friday loss against the Canaries, beating them on Saturday 5-3, thanks to a two-run seventh that broke up a tie game. RF Mitch Glasser doubled to bring in the first run of the inning and a batter later 1B Geraldo Valentin singled him in to make it 5-3. Glasser was 1-4 in the win, scoring twice on the night. Valentin finished 3-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. RHP Alberto Rodriguez earned the win in relief, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings and striking out three in his first win of the year. RHP Winston Abreu earned the save, pitching a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save of the season. CF Burt Reynolds had a strong game in the loss, picking up three hits, including hitting his third homer of the year. DH Jabari Henry collected two hits in the loss.

 

St Paul 8, Kansas City 3 – Box

The Saints avenged two straight losses to the T-Bones by beating them on Saturday, earning their 15th win of the young year. The Saints used a four-run fourth and a three-run sixth to propel them to victory. 1B Tony Thomas clobbered his sixth homer of the season in the win, while also collecting two hits. C Maxx Garrett homered in his first hitting appearance of the season for the Saints. 2B Zach Walters starred in the loss, hitting his sixth homer and picking up his 20th RBI of the season. RHP John Straka had a workhorse day, earning his third win thanks to seven strong innings. Straka allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three in the win.

Wichita 10, Texas 6 – Box 

The Airhogs led briefly, scoring a run in the first inning. However, the lead quickly disappeared, as the Wingnuts rattled off four runs in the second inning, with the big play coming on a RBI triple from LF Brennan Salgado. Before the Airhogs could catch their breath, the Wingnuts added four more runs to the lead and led 8-1 in the fifth. The Airhogs were able to score five more runs in the game, but the Wingnuts added two insurance runs in the ninth to make it a 10-6 victory. The win moved the Wingnuts to an impressive 15-8 record. DH Zac Fisher picked up three hits in the win, and drove in two runs while scoring once. 3B Ryne Willard collected three hits and knocked in two runs in the loss. RHP Eddie Medina earned the win, going six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out four while walking three batters.
