ROYALS PURCHASE GIBBS FROM AIRHOGS

Gibbs Hitting

DURHAM, NC – Micah Gibbs’(pictured) stint in independent baseball was short-lived. After spending parts of four seasons in the Chicago Cubs’ organization, the switch-hitting catcher/outfielder has had his contract purchased by the Kansas City Royals.

Gibbs played 14 games this season for the Grand Prairie AirHogs. In those games, he hit two doubles and drove in three runs, while compiling an on-base percentage of .315. Additionally, Gibbs’ last hit with the AirHogs went for extra bases, as he tripled against St. Paul on Thursday.

Before joining Grand Prairie, Gibbs was drafted by the Cubs in the third round of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft. The Louisiana State University product began his career in the rookie-level Arizona League, but jumped to short-season Boise after just one game in Arizona. The Cubs moved Gibbs up to High-A Daytona in the Florida State League earlier this season before he signed with Grand Prairie.

The Royals purchased Gibbs’ contract earlier today. They are expected to send him to the High-A Carolina League, where he will play for the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
