Sermo

Durham, N.C. — The contract of Gary SouthShore RailCats INF Jose Sermo has been purchased by the Boston Red Sox organization, the American Association announced on Monday.

Sermo had a superb debut to the season with Gary, leading the team with a .311 average, 24 RBI and five doubles, and tying for the club lead with five home runs and 33 hits in 29 games. The versatile native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, split the season between third base and shortstop, but has also played first base, second base and outfield during his career.

2016 marked the second season with the RailCats for Sermo, who played 49 games for the club last season, hitting .290 with 26 RBI. Prior to Gary, he also played in the independent Frontier League, in addition to spending three seasons in the Milwaukee Brewers’ organization, reaching as high as Double-A.

Sermo was originally a 35th-round choice of the Brewers in the 2012 draft after playing collegiately at Bethany (Kan.) College.
