Sioux Falls 11, Winnipeg 3 — Box Score
Sioux Falls starting pitcher Miguel Pena went the distance for the Canaries and his teammates backed him up with 11 runs on 17 hits as they took care of the Winnipeg Goldeyes 11-3.
Pena allowed three runs, just one earned, on nine hits over his nine innings of work. He walked just one batter and struck out a pair. Offensively, every Canary that stepped to the plate on the night had at least one hit. Leadoff man RF Chris Grayson had three RBI and SS Jerome Pena also had three RBI batting right behind him. LF Brian Humphries had a pair of RBI and 1B David Bergin had a team-high four hits.
3B R.J. Perucki went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and C Tyler Shover added two hits. For the Goldeyes, CF Adam Heisler and SS Josh Mazzola each had two hits and 2B Omar Artsen had two RBI.
Wichita 16, Joplin 8 — Box Score
The Wichita Wingnuts racked up 16 runs on 15 hits as they handled the Joplin Blasters 16-8.
Eight of the nine batters in the Wichita order had hits and four of them had multi-hit games. SS Luis Hernandez, DH Matt Padgett and C Brent Dean each had three hits in the game and both Hernandez and Dean scored three runs. Dean had three RBI in the game as did 2B T.J. Mittelstaedt but Padgett had a game-high four RBI to lead to way.
For the Blasters both SS Maikol Gonzalez ad 3B Jake Taylor had three hits and LF Oscar Mesa added a pair.
Lincoln 3, Gary SouthShore 1 (Game 1 – 7 Innings) — Box Score
The Lincoln Saltdogs scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take the first game of their Saturday doubleheader with the Gary SouthShore RailCats 3-1.
The game was tied at one run apiece thanks to an 2B Aaron Payne solo shot in the second and DH Stephen Rodgers scoring on a RF Drew Martinez ground out in the sixth. In the seventh, LF Carlton Salters scored on a bases loaded walk and then Payne scored his second run of the night as CF Matt Forgatch reached on an error.
Payne led the way with a 3-for-3 night and 3B Curt Smith added a pair of hits. Starting pitcher Kevin McGovern earned the win for working six innings and allowing just one unearned run on five hits while striking out four batters.
Lincoln 2, Gary SouthShore 0 (Game 2 – 7 Innings) — Box Score
The Lincoln Saltdogs capped off a sweep of their Saturday twin bill with the Gary SouthShore RailCats on the back of starting pitcher Shairon Martis’ complete game performance.
Martis worked all seven innings and allowed just two hits in the game. He didn’t allow any walks and struck out six batters. The RailCats scored both of their runs in the top of the first inning as 3B Curt Smith singled home both SS Eddie Young and CF Matt Forgatch.
Smith had a game-high two hits and Young and Forgatch each had one hit. 2B Aaron Payne also had a hit.
Laredo 6, Grand Prairie 4 — Box Score
The Laredo Lemurs topped the Grand Prairie AirHogs 6-4 with the help of a grand slam from 3B Juan Silverio.
Silverio went 3-for-4 in the game and cleared the bases in the sixth inning with a grand slam to put the Lemurs ahead 4-3. Laredo backed that up with two more runs in the seventh – one on an error and the other on a single by Jarred Mederos. DH Byron Wiley added a pair of hits for the Lemurs.
For the AirHogs, 3B Ridge Hoopii-Haslam went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI and LF Chris Elder had a team-high three hits.
Amarillo 6, Sioux City 3 — Box Score
The Amarillo Thunderheads responded to a three-run first inning by Sioux City with a four-run second and went on to double up the Explorers 6-3.
CF Jason Martin opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first inning but the Explorers took the lead as 3B Rene Tosoni had an RBI single and SS Noah Perio plated two runs with a double in the bottom of the inning. Those three runs would be the only offense for the Explorers on the night. Amarillo took the lead for good in the second with a three-RBI double from RF Logan Vick.
Starting pitcher Clay Chapman was credited with the win for his six innings on the mound. He allowed three runs on five hits and had four strikeouts. Reliever Randy Hamrick sealed the win in the ninth and earned the save.
St. Paul 5, Fargo-Moorhead 2 — Box Score
The St. Paul Saints scored four runs in the second inning and that proved to be enough as they took care of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 5-2.
In the second, RF Angelo Songco scored the first run of the night on a single from SS Anthony Phillips and in the next at bat, 2B Dan Kaczroswski hit a three-run home run to give the Saints a 4-0 lead. The Saints added another run in the eighth on a sac fly from Kaczrowski.
For the RedHawks, C Charlie Valerio and 1B Joe Bonfe each went 2-for-4.
Trois-Rivieres 6, Kansas City 2 — Box Score
The Trois-Rivieres Aigles built a six run lead and held off a late push from the Kansas City T-Bones to win the interleague contest 6-2.
The Aigles scored in the bottom of the first as LF Craig Hertler scored on a double play. In the fifth, RF Sasha LaGarde scored on a sacrifice fly from SS Pedro Lopez. The Aigles added four more runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Hertler and C Kyle Lafrenz and then a bases loaded walk drawn by DH Steve Brown.
The T-Bones scratched out a pair of runs in the top of the ninth as LF Adam Bailey had an RBI double and SS Vladamir Frias had an RBI single but the Aigles ended the rally as reliever Alex Kreis struck out DH Joe Rapp and forced C Brian Erie, who had two hits, to ground out to end the game.
