Durham, N.C. — The Arizona Diamondbacks organization has purchased the contract of Gary SouthShore RailCats LHP Alex Gunn.

Gunn, a native of Clinton, Miss., recorded back-to-back quality starts in his last two appearances. The former Memphis Tiger was thriving in the fourth starter role for the Cats. He began the year in the bullpen and had a 7.20 ERA in six outings. The switch flipped for Gunn when he moved to the starting rotation on June 7th. Since then, he has only allowed eight earned runs in six starts, good for a 2.20 ERA.

Gunn has solid statistics for the season as a whole, including a 2-0 record with a 3.37 ERA. He boasts 23 strikeouts compared to 11 walks. Opponents were batting just .238 against Gunn.

The 24 year-old is in his second professional season. After finishing his senior year at Memphis, Gunn made his professional debut on August 2, 2015 with the Laredo Lemurs. He was not drafted out of college. He made four appearances, including two starts, with the Lemurs in 2015. He had a 0-1 record and a 6.45 ERA.

The RailCats originally acquired Gunn on August 17, 2015 as part of a three-player trade with Laredo. The Cats also acquired INF Jarred Mederos in that trade. Gunn did not pitch for Gary SouthShore in 2015. He signed with the team for this season on November 20, 2015.

Gunn joins INF Jose Sermo and RHP Matt Solter as RailCats to have their contract purchased this year. The San Francisco Giants signed Solter before the season on April 15th. Sermo went to the Boston Red Sox organization on June 20th.
