DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Cleburne Railroaders RHP Cortland Cox (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 6.
Cox made two appearances this week, and tossed 7.2 scoreless innings. He scattered four hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out 12.
The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., resident made his first appearance of the week on Monday, working five innings in relief against the Kansas City T-Bones. Over the game’s final five innings, Cox allowed just one hit, did not walk a T-Bones hitter, and struck out an impressive 10 batters. He earned the victory in the game as Cleburne won 2-1 in 14 innings. Cox and four other Railroaders hurlers combined to limit Kansas City to just two hits over the marathon game.
Cox returned to the mound on Saturday to face the Salina Stockade. In 2.2 relief innings, he did not allow a run while giving up three hits and striking out two. Cleburne suffered a narrow 2-0 loss.
On the season, Cox is now 3-2 with a 2.84 ERA. In 26 appearances, all of which have come in relief, Cox has struck out 49 over 38 innings.
Cox is in his first year in Cleburne and the American Association after four seasons in the Cleveland Indians system. A 32nd-round pick of the Indians in 2013 out of Riverside City College, Cox pitched as high as the Class AA Akron (Ohio) RubberDucks of the Eastern League. He struck out a career high 63 hitters in 70.1 innings in 2016 with the RubberDucks and Class A Lake County (Ohio) Captains of the Midwest League.
