BLASTERS DEFEAT SALTDOGS WITH LATE RALLY

August 18 Evening Recap

Joplin 4, Lincoln 3 – Box

Joplin C Ermindo Escobar singled home 3B Brandon Tierney with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Blasters rallied past the Lincoln Saltdogs, 4-3. Lincoln had a 3-0 lead after five innings only to see Joplin score two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and the winning run in the eighth to pull off the victory. Joplin leadoff hitter Mitch Glasser and DH Edwin Gomez each went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI while PH/RF Mark Krueger drove in a run and collected a pair of hits. Blasters reliever Roby Romero tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings to notch his first victory. For Lincoln in the losing effort, SS Cesar Valera went 3-for-5 and scored a run.

Wichita 5, Kansas City 4 – Box

Catcher Martin Medina’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning broke a 4-4 tie and lifted the Wichita Wingnuts to a 5-4 win over the Kansas City T-Bones. Wichita 3B Zack Cox was the star offensively going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Wingnuts 2B Christian Stringer and CF T.J. Mittelstaedt each added two hits on the night with Stringer scoring a pair of runs and Mittelstaedt driving in two. Wichita pitcher Gage Smith tossed a scoreless eighth inning to earn his first victory of the year. Left fielder Starlin Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored in the loss for Kansas City.

Fargo-Moorhead 10, Sioux City 7 – Box

Fargo-Moorhead scored four runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-3 lead and would go on to defeat Sioux City by the score of 10-7. The RedHawks had 12 hits in the contest with eight of the nine batters collecting at least one. Fargo-Moorhead LF Brian Humphries went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and three RBI while 2B Ryan Pineda and DH Keury De La Cruz each had two hits and plated two runs. RedHawks starting pitcher Will Solomon picked up the win and improved his mark to 5-2 on the season. Solomon gave up five earned runs on seven hits in six innings pitched.

Gary SouthShore 3, Sioux Falls 2 – Box

After Sioux Falls launched a pair of home runs in the top of the eighth to take a 2-0 lead, Gary SouthShore came right back in the bottom of the frame to score three runs of their own and beat the Canaries, 3-2. RailCats CF Anthony Cheky went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI while RF Chase Harris chipped in a double and scored a run. Gary SouthShore pitcher Moises Melendez nabbed the victory in relief and is now 4-1 on the year. Melendez gave up two earned runs on three hits with a strikeout in an inning of work.  The victory by the RailCats was their third in a row and now sit only 2 ½ games out of first place in the Central Division.
