DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Laredo Lemurs RHP Omar Bencomo has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 14.

Bencomo, just acquired in a trade on June 4 from the Wichita Wingnuts, had a memorable first two starts for the Lemurs. On June 8, he faced his old team and earned a victory by logging eight innings and allowing one run on seven hits. Bencomo walked one batter and struck out four as the Lemurs won 6-1 over the Wingnuts. Bencomo took the mound again on June 14 and threw eight shutout frames, scattering five hits. Without walking a batter, the Venezuelan struck out five Kansas City T-Bones at Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo. The Lemurs won 4-0, and now sit 11-11 on the season.

Bencomo is now 3-0 with a 1.33 combined ERA between his two teams this season. In four starts, he has struck out 21 batters in 27 innings and only walked four.

This is Bencomo’s first season in the American Association after playing in Venezuela in 2013 and 2014. He spent three years with the Tampa Bay Rays system in the United States, playing from 2009-2011. Bencomo’s best season was in 2009, when he had a 3.47 ERA with the Rookie level Princeton Rays in the Appalachian League.

The Lemurs begin a series with the Trois-Rivieres Aigles of the Can-Am League tonight at 7:30 p.m. Central time in Laredo, Tex. That game, like all Lemurs home games, can be seen live and for free at
