DURHAM, NC – Jose Gil (pictured) joined the Saltdogs on June 28, but he’s already on his way out. The New York Yankees purchased Gil’s contract yesterday, bringing him back to the organization he was part of for eight years.
The Yankees signed Gil back in 2005 and he steadily climbed the system, reaching Triple-A for the first time in 2011. The following year, the Venezuelan backstop played most of the season at Double-A Trenton, but changed organizations in 2013. Gil began this season in the Baltimore Orioles’ farm system before signing with Lincoln in late June.
Gil, 26, is expected to report to the Trenton Thunder, where he played parts of four seasons from 2009-12. The catcher is now the fifth American Association player in the last week to be purchased by a major league organization.
