DURHAM, NC- Winnipeg Goldeyes LHP Nick Hernandez (pictured) has ridden a perfect record to the American Association’s first Rawlings Pitcher of the Month award. Hernandez was selected by Pointstreak, the official statistician of the American Association. The Winnipeg southpaw is 4-0 on the season, with all four wins coming in the month of June. He boasts an incredible 42-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in eight starts so far.
On June 5, Hernandez faced the Sioux Falls Canaries and struck out six hitters in six and 2/3 innings to earn his first win of the year. He allowed only one run and no walks in the effort. On June 11, Hernandez scattered three hits and one run over six and 2/3 innings while striking out four Grand Prairie AirHogs to pick up win no. 2. Hernandez struck out nine New Jersey Jackals in a no-decision on June 19, a season high for the former University of Tennessee Volunteer. Hernandez returned to the win column June 23 with a no-run, eight-strikeout performance against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles as the Goldeyes won 4-0. His last start of the month came on June 28 against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, when he struck out four and walked only one in seven innings to earn the win in a 5-4 triumph for the Goldeyes.
The Goldeyes (29-14) lead the Northern division of the American Association. They host the Kansas City T-Bones tonight at 7:00 p.m. Central time at Shaw Park in Winnipeg.
