Lincoln 11, Sioux Falls 10 (12 innings)

3B Curt Smith (pictured) connected on a 1-2 pitch in the bottom of the 12th for a three-run, walk-off homer to beat Sioux Falls, 11-10. The Saltdogs came from behind to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth and the bottom of the 11th before breaking through in the 12th.

Sioux Falls took the lead with a five-run fourth inning, making the score 5-1, but Lincoln kept the Canaries within arm’s reach throughout the game. RF Stephen Douglas hit a two-RBI single in the seventh to make it 5-4, but Sioux Falls’ LF JP Ramirez jacked a solo home run in the eighth, and 3B Jared Clark hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth to give the Canaries a 7-4 ninth-inning lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Lincoln 2B David Espinosa led off with a walk and scored on 1B Ian Gac’s RBI single. Douglas singled to put two men on, and LF Matt Forgatch cleared the bases with a two-RBI double to tie the game. Forgatch and Gac each had three hits and two RBI in the game.

After a scoreless tenth, Canaries’ SS Cory Morales hit a sacrifice fly to give Sioux Falls an 8-7 lead, but Gac answered with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 11th, keeping his team alive.

Sioux Falls DH Tim Pahuta briefly emerged as the game’s hero when he put Sioux Falls ahead 10-8 with a two-run homer in the top of the 12th, but Smith sent Saltdog fans home happy with his walk-off shot.

Lincoln relief pitcher Danny Meszaros (1-0) picked up his first win, despite giving up three runs in the 11th and 12th.

Winnipeg 8, Trois-Rivieres 3

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, the Goldeyes scored 8 runs during the next four innings to beat Trois-Rivieres, 8-3. Starter Chris Salamida (1-0) got the win for the Goldeyes, pitching six innings of one-run ball.

The Aigles took the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by SS David JL Cooper.  In the home fifth, Winnipeg scored three runs — two on an error and one more on an RBI single by C Luis Alen. The next inning, the Goldeyes scored one run on 1B Casey Haerther’s  RBI single. Haerther and Alen each had three hits in the game. The Goldeyes kept it going in the seventh with 2B Kevin Moesquit’s RBI single and a two-run homer from 2B Ray Sadler. Winnipeg added an eighth run in the eighth when SS Josh Mazzola went first to third on a wild pitch and then scored on LF Fehlandt Lentini’s RBI single.

The Aigles put up a fight in the top of the ninth with a two-run home run from LF Jon Smith before RHP Patrick Keating locked down the win.

Kansas City 7, El Paso 2

The T-Bones beat El Paso 7-2 behind a complete game from RHP Lucas Irvine. Irvine (5-4) allowed one earned run on five hits, struck out nine and walked two. The Diablos’ only two runs came on a fielder’s choice and a passed ball in the third inning.

Kansas City gave Irvine a lead early with a four-run first inning. The first six T-Bones’ batters reached base on five singles and an error. C Petey Paramore drove in two runs in the first with a two-RBI single. He would drive in two more runs with a single in the fourth inning and finished 3-for-3 with a walk and four RBI. CF Kennard Jones also had a stellar game, batting 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.

St. Paul 6, Gary SouthShore 1

LF Willie Cabrera jacked a first-inning, three-run homer to give St. Paul an early lead, and the Saints went on to beat Gary SouthShore, 6-1. Cabrera batted 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

DH Brandon Tripp added to the lead in the third with an RBI double and a fourth-inning sac fly from SS Adam Frost made it 5-0. RailCats’ RF Mike Massaro got Gary SouthShore on the board in the sixth with an RBI single, but the RailCats couldn’t muster any more offense. Saints’ RF Dan Kaczrowski extended the lead to 6-1 with an eight-inning RBI single.

On the mound, RHP Billy Soule (1-0) picked up his first win of the year on six innings of one-run ball. He allowed five hits, struck out two and walked two.

Wichita 4, Grand Prairie 3

A two-out rally in the eighth inning pushed Wichita past Grand Prairie, 4-3.

Trailing 3-2, the Wingnuts first two batters went down before 1B CJ Ziegler drew a four-pitch walk. With a 1-0 count, CF Brent Clevlen, smacked a triple to tie the game. In the next at-bat, still with two outs, 3B Abel Nieves brought Clevlen home as the go-ahead run with an RBI single.

Closer Josh Dew pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the win and earn his 15th save. Relief pitcher Nick Walters (3-1) picked up the win after recording the final out of the seventh inning when Grand Prairie C Angel Flores got thrown out on the basepaths.

The AirHogs scored all three of their runs in the seventh inning on LF Austin Newell’s RBI double, Flores’ RBI single and CF Rian Kiniry’s RBI single.

Laredo 4, Amarillo 3

2B Garrett Rau drove in the game-winning run with a two-RBI single in the eighth inning, and Laredo beat Amarillo, 4-3.

The Sox retired the first two Laredo batters in the bottom of the eighth, but C Brian Peterson’s two-out single breathed new life into the inning. RF Mike Sheridan followed with another single, and on a seldom-seen play, Lemurs’ CF Daniel Poma extended the inning by reaching first base on catcher obstruction. With the bases now loaded, Rau singled to the shortstop to give Laredo a 4-2 lead.

Amarillo battled back in the ninth with an RBI single from LF Joe Weik to make it 4-3, Laredo closer Mark Haynes got Sox DH Chris Grossman to fly out to second base to lock down his sixth save. Weik led the Sox with four hits, one RBI and a run scored. Right-handed relief pitcher Jameson Maj (1-1) earned his first win of the season by pitching a scoreless eighth in which he allowed one hit and struck out two. Laredo’s pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts Saturday night, eight of which came from starter  Fabian Williamson, who allowed one earned run in six innings but didn’t factor in the decision.

Fargo-Moorhead 11, Sioux City 9

An explosive nine-run third inning propelled the RedHawks to an 11-9 win against Sioux City. Fargo-Moorhead brought 13 batters to the plate in the third inning, which featured RBI singles from 2B C.J. Retherford, DH Tim Alberts and LF Mitch Einertson. RF Buddy Sosnoskie had an RBI double in the inning, and 3B Ronnie Bourquin, who led off the inning with a single, hit a grand slam to put the RedHawks ahead 9-3.

Six RedHawks had multi-hit games, including all three batters in the lineup’s top three spots. In the leadoff spot, Zach Penprase went 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Bourquin batted 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored in the No. 2 spot, and CF Nic Jackson batted 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and two RBI hitting third in the order.

Trailing 11-6, the Explorers attempted a comeback in the ninth and scored three runs, but LHP Joe Harris recorded the final two outs to pick up his second save. LHP Jake Laber (5-5) was the game’s winning pitcher. Laber surrendered five earned runs on nine hits, struck out three and walked one.
