SAINTS PULL AWAY LATE FOR HOME WIN

St. Paul 6, Sioux Falls 2 Box

After six innings of scoreless baseball the action and the bats heated up in the final three frames and the St. Paul Saints sealed a 6-2 win behind a four-run eighth inning.

Both starting pitchers had solid outings in the contest. Sioux Falls starter Joe Bircher tossed seven innings and allowed just two runs on four hits and St. Paul starter Anthony Claggett – who earned the win — lasted eight innings and gave up just two runs on five hits. The Saints broke the scoreless tie in the seventh inning when DH Henry Wrigley hit a two-run homerun after fouling off four pitches. The Canaries responded with two runs of their own in the next frame on a RF Chris Valencia double.

In the eighth 2B Devin Thaut singled home a pair of runs to put the Saints back in front. St. Paul extended the lead when 3B Joe Bonfe pushed across a run and added another when Thaut scored in the next at bat. Thaut was 2-for-4 in the game and had two RBI like Wrigley.

Sioux City 7, Gary SouthShore 3Box

Sioux City pulled away late to pick up a road win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats 7-3 Monday night.

The game was tied at three going into the top of the eighth inning but the Explorers made sure that it wasn’t tied going into the ninth. C Todd Jennings doubled home 3B Tommy Mendonca and 2B Andres Perez to break the tie. Jennings, Mendonca and Perez each had one-hit games. Jennings scored in the next at bat with DH Dillon Usiak on a single from LF Oscar Mesa. Mesa went 2-for-4 in the game and he and Usiak each had two-RBI games.

For the RailCats, RF Drew Martinez had a team-high two hits. On the bump, Sioux City starter Greg Holt earned the win for working seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven batters.
