DURHAM, NC – The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Wichita Wingnuts RHP Christopher M. Smith (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week.
Wichita took command of first place in the Central Division by stringing together 13 wins and Smith was a key contributor. The right-hander has won each of his last five starts, including two this week against Sioux City and Lincoln. Between his two outings this week, Smith only surrendered one run in 14.2 innings.
Smith took the hill against the Explorers on Monday, looking to give the Wingnuts their 11th straight victory. He succeeded by tossing eight scoreless innings and striking out nine Sioux City batters. Smith gave up four hits and walked one en route to his fourth win in a row.
Next time out, Smith did not last as long, but mowed down Lincoln’s hitters. The Wingnuts’ starter struck out 12 Saltdogs over 6.2 innings. He allowed one run, a fifth inning home run, but otherwise kept Lincoln off the scoreboard. The Saltdogs managed just three hits off Smith, who improved to 7-3.
