The Sioux City Explorers (15-10) pulled away from the Kane County Cougars to claim a 7-5 win on Monday evening at Northwestern Medicine Field.

The Explorers struck first in the top of the third inning when DH Sebastian Zawada singled home 3B Jose Sermo (2-for-5) and LF Joseph Monge (2-for-4) drew a bases-loaded walk. In the fourth, Sermo hit a two-run home run that also scored 2B L.T. Tolbert (2-for-6). For the Cougars (10-14), in the bottom of the fourth, LF Mitch Reeves bounced into a double play, but 1B Kacy Clemens (3-for-5) had time to score on the play.

In the next frame, SS Nick Santoro scored on a sac fly from RF Jeffrey Baez and CF Anfernee Seymour scored when Clemens doubled. Clemens and 2B Luis Roman (2-for-4) both scored when 3B Gavin LaValley (3-for-4) doubled to right to give the Cougars the 5-4 lead.

The Explorers took the lead back in the top of the sixth when Sermo doubled home CF Chase Harris (2-for-4) and then came across the plate when SS Chris Clare (2-for-5) singled. Harris added an RBI single in the seventh when he plated C Mitch Ghelfi.

Explorers starting pitcher Zach Hedges picked up the win as he went six innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits while striking out two batters. Reliever Matt Pobereyko earned the four-out save while allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
