June 19 Night Recap
St. Paul 4, Winnipeg 3
Dan Kaczrowski’s single in the ninth gave St. Paul a walk-off win over Winnipeg, 4-3. Winnipeg was down 3-1 in the eighth when Leonard Davis shocked the Saints with a two-run, game-tying home run. But, the Saints jumped on the Goldeyes in the ninth. Brandon Tripp led off with a single and Jose Hernandez followed up with a double. After the Goldeyes made a pitching change, Jordan Tripp worked a walk to load the bases with nobody out. Winnipeg reliever Patrick Keating was able to strike out Dwight Childs. But, right after the strike out, Kaczrowski pulled a single into left to score Brandon Tripp and win the game.
Fargo-Moorhead 4, Trois-Rivieres 0
A couple of RBI doubles off the bat of C.J. Retherford paired with a strong pitching performance by Paul Burnside led to a 4-0 RedHawks victory over Trois-Rivieres. Retherford opened the scoring with a two-bagger in the first that scored Zach Penprase. The Fargo-Moorhead second baseman struck again in the third with a double that brought Nic Jackson home. Retherford’s second double was part of a three-run inning that helped the RedHawks distance themselves from the Aigles.
Burnside struck out eight batters over six innings to pick up the win. He allowed just three hits and held the Aigles scoreless before Joe Harris and Nathan Kilcrease finished the job over the last three frames.
Lincoln 2, Sioux City 1
The Saltdogs narrowly edged Sioux City, 2-1, in a well-pitched ball game by Jason Jarvis and Mike Burns. Both starters pitched eight impressive innings, but Burns earned the victory thanks to a seventh-inning sacrifice fly by Dan Carroll. Brian Embery came home on Carroll’s sacrifice fly to break a 1-1 tie and give Burns a much-deserved win. The Lincoln right-hander gave up just one run on six hits over eight innings. Jarvis, on the other hand, only surrendered two runs on five hits in a performance that might have earned him a win on any other night.
Wichita 7, Gary SouthShore 1
C.J. Ziegler went deep twice for the Wingnuts, as they beat Gary SouthShore, 7-1. Ziegler hit a two-run shot in the fifth and a solo home run to lead off the seventh to give him a league-leading 12 long balls on the season. He also vaulted himself to first in the league in RBI with 34. Ziegler, however, was not the only Wichita hitter to turn in a strong performance. Jake Kahaulelio hit a two-run homer in the first inning and four different Wingnuts delivered multiple hits in the win.
Not to be forgotten amidst all of the offense was the pitching performance by Ryan Hinson. The Wingnuts starter went eight innings, allowing one run on five hits to grab the win. Hinson fanned five batters in the outing to improve his record to 5-1.
Laredo 5, Sioux Falls 3
Laredo used a three-run seventh inning to grab a win against Sioux Falls, 5-3. The Canaries and Lemurs were tied heading into the seventh, but Laredo quickly took the lead in the first three batters of the inning. Harrison Kain, Garrett Rau, and Jimmy Mojica led the inning off with three straight hits that plated two runs. Later in the inning, Sawyer Carroll drove in an insurance run with an RBI single. Sioux Falls 1B Tim Pahuta hit a solo home run in the eighth, but Mike Benacka shut the door with a perfect ninth. Benacka has now converted each of his last five saves and has been perfect in each of those appearances.
