Fargo-Moorhead 5, Sioux City 4 – 17 Innings — Box Score
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and the Sioux City Explorers needed 17 innings over two days to decide a winner and set a new league record for longest game in the process. After five hours and 44 minutes, the RedHawks walked off on the Explorers 5-4.
The game was tied at two after nine innings thanks to first inning RBIs from 3B Josh Mazzola (pictured) and RF K.D. Kang and an eighth inning solo shot from 1B Matt Koch and an unearned run from 3B Tommy Mendonca in the ninth. Both teams scored in the 16th inning, which was the final inning played before the game was halted due to league rules. When play resumed on Wednesday in the top of the 17th, LF Tim Colwell singled to score SS Nate Samson and gave the Explorers a 4-3 lead.
But in the bottom of the frame, PH Ryan Wagner scored when DH Keury De La Cruz (who had a game high four hits) hit into a fielder’s choice and in the next at-bat – the 137th at-bat of the game – Mazzola singled to plate LF Chad Mozingo and ended the marathon contest. The previous record for longest game was five hours and 22 minutes which was a 15-inning game in the 2011 season between El Paso and Wichita.
Kansas City 2, Lincoln 0 — Box Score
The Kansas City T-Bones pitching staff combined to shut out the Lincoln Saltdogs 2-0.
Five different T-Bones saw the mound in the game beginning with starter Lucas Daugherty, who went four innings and allowed just four hits. Reliever Josh Tols, who earned the win, worked the next 2.2 innings and gave up just two hits. Reliever Mark Haynes recorded the final five outs without giving up a hit to earn the save.
The only offense of the night came when 1B Jake Blackwood hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning. Lincoln starter Lindsey Caughel had a solid outing in the loss, going eight innings and allowing just four hits while striking out eight batters.
Winnipeg 2, Gary SouthShore 1 — Box Score
After giving up the first run of the game in the top of the third, the Winnipeg Goldeyes took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth and made it stand up for a 2-1 win against the Gary SouthShore RailCats.
The RailCats took the lead when 2B Elbert Devarie hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a single from CF Brennan Metzger later in the inning. But in the bottom of the fourth, DH Carter McEachern doubled home 1B Jacob Rogers and then scored when LF Ridge Hoopii-Haslam tripled in the next at-bat to give the Goldeyes the lead.
The Winnipeg pitching staff gave up just six hits in the game and five of those came off of starter and eventual winner Duke Von Schamann. Von Schamann went six innings and gave up the one run while striking out four. The start of the game was delayed by 25 minutes due to rain.
Texas 6, Wichita 5 — Box Score
The Texas AirHogs built an early lead and held off a ninth-inning rally from the Wichita Wingnuts to seal a 6-5 win.
The AirHogs loaded up the bases in the top of the first inning and plated three quick runs thanks to an RBI single from 2B Brian Bistagne, a ground out from DH Austin Gallagher and C Michael Miller reaching on an error. Texas added one run each in the second, fourth and seventh innings to take a 6-3 lead into the final frame. In the bottom of the ninth, CF Harrison Kain doubled to score C Martin Medina and RF Richard Prigatano scored when SS Leo Vargas bounced out but 2B Christian Stringer grounded out to the second baseman in the next at-bat to end the game.
Five different AirHogs recorded RBI in the game and there of them also had two-hit nights – CF Michael Hur, LF Burt Reynolds and 1B Devon Rodriguez.
Laredo 8, Joplin 4 — Box Score
The Joplin Blasters scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning but Laredo scored eight unanswered the rest of the way to earn an 8-4 win.
In the first, RF Luis Terrero and SS Cory Morales had RBI singles sandwiched around a two-RBI triple from 1B Charlie Valerio but the Lemurs allowed just two more hits the rest of the night. Laredo got on the board in the top of the third when 1B Jesus Posso hit a solo home run and 3B Cesar Valera and C Zane Chavez each had RBI base hits. Valera and Chavez each added another RBI in the fifth to give Laredo the lead.
Chavez put the exclamation mark on the win with a two-run home run in the ninth to give him four RBI in the game. Chavez, Valera and LF Leandro Castro each had three hits in the game.
Sioux City 6, Fargo-Moorhead 6 — Suspended (Curfew)
For the second night in a row, the game between the Explorers and RedHawks has been suspended due to the curfew rule, with the score tied 6-6 after 7 innings. The game was delayed for two hours and 45 minutes due to rain and it will resume at 4:00 p.m. CT on Thursday, June 30, at Newman Outdoor Field.
