PETE ROSE JR. NAMED NEW WINGNUTS SKIPPER

Wichita, Kan. —  At a press conference at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday, the Wichita Wingnuts introduced Pete Rose Jr. as the third manager in club history.

Rose joins the Wingnuts after managing for four seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization. Most recently, he was the skipper for Class-A Kannapolis of the South Atlantic League during the 2014 season. In 2013, Rose led Great Falls of the Rookie-level Pioneer League to a 48-28 record, the best mark in the league. He spent the 2011 and 2012 campaigns with Bristol of the Rookie-level Appalachian League.

The Cincinnati native is no stranger to independent baseball, either on the coaching or the playing side. In 2010, Rose made his coaching debut as the hitting instructor for Florence of the Frontier League. Prior to that, he spent parts of 10 of his 21 seasons as a professional player in independent baseball, including time with the Lincoln Saltdogs (2004) and Winnipeg Goldeyes (2002) when both clubs were in the Northern League.

Originally a 12th-round choice in the 1988 draft by the Baltimore Orioles, Rose also played in the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Chicago White Sox organizations, and reached the big leagues with the Reds in 1997.

The son of Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader, Rose replaces Kevin Hooper, who was hired as the San Diego Padres’ minor league field coordinator in January. Hooper led the Wingnuts to six playoff appearances and the 2014 league championship in his seven seasons with the Wingnuts.
