PENA GARNERS FIRST PITCHER OF THE WEEK NOD

DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Sioux Falls Canaries LHP Miguel Pena (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 24.

The former Boston Red Sox property threw seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 Canaries win at the Sioux City Explorers on May 23. Pena allowed five hits and a walk, and struck out two as he earned the win. Pena is now 1-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA on the season.

This is Pena’s first season in the American Association after four years in the Boston system. Pena reached as high as the AA Portland Sea Dogs in 2014. His best season was in 2011 for the Short Season A Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League, when he carried a 2.35 ERA in five games. Pena struck out 22 batters and only walked three in 2011. Additionally, Pena was selected to play for the Surprise Saguaros in Arizona Fall League in 2013. Pena struck out 19 in 27.2 innings pitched for the Saguaros.

Pena was a 6th round pick of the Red Sox in the 2011 draft out of San Jacinto College in Houston, Tex. He was also drafted in the 13th round in 2010 by the San Diego Padres and in the 5th round in 2009 by the Washington Nationals, but did not sign.

The Canaries begin an interleague series against the Quebec Capitales of the Can-Am League on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Central at “The Birdcage”- Sioux Falls Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D.
