Kansas City 8, Fargo-Moorhead 1 – Box Score
The Kansas City Monarchs finished off the 2021 campaign in style as they swept the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 3-0 in the American Association Finals after an 8-1 win Monday night at home.
The Monarchs posted the best record in the regular season (69-31) and then followed that with a perfect postseason (6-0) to claim the franchise’s second title in four seasons.
Kansas City took the lead in game three in the third inning as Finals MVP RF Gabriel Guerrero (2-for-5, 4 RBI) doubled with the bases loaded to score 2B Ryan Grotjohn, CF Paulo Orlando (3-for-3, 2 R) and C Alexis Olmeda. Guerrero added single in the fifth that allowed SS Morgan McCullough (3-for-5, 2 RBI) to score and, in the next at-bat, 3B Darnell Sweeney (3-for-5) scored on a wild pitch. In the seventh, McCullough doubled home LF Colin Willis and Orlando to push the lead to 7-1.
Sweeney singled home McCullough in the bottom of the eighth for the final run of the day.
The RedHawks’ lone run came in the top of the fourth with LF Jordan George scored after 3B Leobaldo Pina (2-for-4) singled.
Starting pitcher Keyvius Sampson earned the win as he worked five innings and gave up the one unearned run on four hits while striking out four batters.
