Wichita 5, Sioux Falls 3 – 10 Innings — Box Score
Wichita’s T.J. Mittelstaedt gave the Wingnuts a 5-3 walk-off win in the 10th inning as he ended the game with a two-run home run.
Sioux Falls held an early lead after SS Jerome Pena had an RBI single in the first and 2B Michael Broad and CF Jake Luce added RBI in the fourth. The Wingnuts chipped away at that lead with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth. In the bottom of the ninth, SS Luis Hernandez – who went 2-for-4 in the game – extended the game with a groundout to the second baseman that scored DH Joash Brodin.
In the bottom of the tenth, CF Jayce Ray flew out to start the frame but RF David Espinosa, who also had a pair of hits, singled and the Mittelstaedt finished things off when he turned on a 2-1 delivery and hit his ninth home run of the year.
Gary SouthShore 10, Kansas City 5 — Box Score
The Gary SouthShore RailCats doubled up the Kansas City T-Bones 10-5 in the second game of their four-game series.
The RailCats jumped out to a nine-run lead after the five and a half innings. The T-Bones scored their first run of the game on a solo shot from 1B Jake Blackwood. Kansas City rallied for four more runs in the eighth but the RailCats cut that comeback effort short. Eight different RailCats had hits in the game and three of them had more than one. 2B J.D. Pulfer went 2-for-4 with two runs and two runs scored in addition to drawing a pair of walks. CF Jon Jones, who hit a three-run home run in the fourth, had a game-high four hits and four RBI.
1B Michael Schroeder also had a multi-hit game as he went 3-for-5 with an RBI. For the T-Bones, four batters had multi-hit games and they were led by CF Robby Kuzdale who went 3-for-5.
St. Paul 12, Winnipeg 6 — Box Score
The St. Paul Saints racked up 16 hits and scored in five straight innings on their way to a 12-6 win against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
All nine Saints that went to the plate left with at least one hit five of them had multi-hit games. C Vinny DeFazio paced the team as he went 4-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Four Saints – LF Willie Argo, DH Joey Paciorek, 3B Ryan Lashley and 2B Dan Kaczrowski – each had two hits on the night and Lashley added a pair of RBI. For the Goldyes, RF Chris Robinson went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to lead the team.
On the bump, starting pitcher Jeff Shields earned the win as he went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out four.
New Jersey 2, Fargo-Moorhead 0 — Box Score
The New Jersey Jackals shutout the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 2-0 in an interleague affair behind the pitching efforts of starter Gabriel Perez and reliever Hector Nelo.
Perez worked 7.1 innings and allowed just three hits while striking out nine batters. Perez improved to 6-1 on the season with the win. Nelo finished the game off by striking out all five batters he faced to earn the save. Fargo-Moorhead’s starter Brandon Munn pitched well despite the loss as he tossed a complete game and allowed just two runs on seven hits to go along with eight strikeouts.
Offensively, DH A.J. Kirby-Jones went 2-for-4 with an RBI and SS Peter Mooney added the Jackals’ other RBI. CF Jamal Austin was the only other player in the game to have more than one hit.
Sioux City 7, Lincoln 3 — Box Score
The Sioux City Explorers scored three runs in the second inning and never trailed on their way to a 7-3 win against the Lincoln Saltdogs.
2B Ryan Court doubled to score DH Brock Kjeldgaard and SS Noah Perio in the bottom of the second. Court scored on a single by 3B Tommy Mendonca to give the Explorers a 3-0 lead. C Mitch Canham hit a solo shot in the fourth and LF Steven Tinoco hit a sac fly in the fifth to draw the Saltdogs within one but Kjeldgaard had two RBI and Court added another in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Kjeldgaard had a game-high three hits and both Mendonca and Perio added a pair of hits. For the Saltdogs, Canham lead the team with two hits and two RBI.
Amarillo 4, Grand Prairie 2 – 6 Innings/Rain — Box Score
The game between the Amarillo Thunderheads and the Grand Prairie AirHogs was called after five and a half innings of play because of rain and the Thunderheads claimed a 4-2 win.
The AirHogs took an early lead as DH Jamodrick McGruder scored on a single by C Zane Chavez in the top of the first inning. The Thunderheads got on the board in the third inning as OF Dexter Kjerstad scored on a wild pitch and OF Logan Vick scored on a single by 2B/LF Geraldo Valentin. Valentin and INF Juan Martinez both scored later in the inning on a double from DH Stefan Gartrell. The AirHogs scored their only other run of the night in the top of the sixth as SS Robi Estrada singled and then scored on a single by 2B Miguel Castano.
Starting pitcher Clay Chapman picked up the win in the rain-shortened affair as he worked all six innings and allowed the two runs on five hits. He recorded three strikeouts. For Grand Prairie, starter T.J. Bozeman worked five innings and allowed four runs (four earned) on four hits and he walked four batters and struck out four. His ERA for the year is now 4.44.
Laredo 9, Joplin 2 — Box Score
The Joplin Blasters scored a run in the first but the Laredo Lemurs responded with nine runs in the middle innings and ended up taking a 9-2 win.
LF Yasser Gomez hit an RBI single to get things started but the Lemurs took the lead in the third inning and never trailed again. Laredo scored four runs on RBI base hits from LF Dvontrey Richardson, 1B Dustin Geiger, RF Denis Phipps and 2B Kevin Taylor. Geiger added another two RBI in the fourth with a two-run home run. Laredo added another run in the fifth and C Brian Peterson hit a two-RBI single in the sixth. To give the Lemurs a 9-1 lead.
CF Oscar Mesa drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth but that would be the final run of the night for the Blasters. Defensive, the Lemurs turned five double plays in the game.
