MARTINEZ BECOMES TWO-TIME PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Amarillo Thunderheads INF Juan Martinez (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending July 19.

Martinez is a two-time winner of the award, having previously won for the week ending May 31. He went 11-for-25 (.440) at the plate this week, collecting four doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI.

The Bakersfield, Calif. resident began his week on Monday at the Laredo Lemurs with a 2-for-4 game. Both hits were doubles, and Martinez drove in three in the Thunderheads’ 6-4 loss. After an off day Tuesday, Martinez and the Thunderheads took on the Joplin Blasters Wednesday. In the completion of a suspended game, Martinez was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Later, in game two, Martinez was 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 7-5 win. A day later, the two clubs played a traditional doubleheader with Amarillo winning game one 7-4. Martinez contributed to the win by going 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. In the nightcap, he was 1-for-3 in a 5-1 loss. On Friday, Martinez went 1-for-3 again with a walk in a 5-4 loss, but quickly bounced back with his best game of the week. In an 11-9 loss to Joplin on Saturday, Martinez was 5-for-5 with a double, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.

Martinez is now hitting .353 on the season with 16 doubles, a triple and four home runs with 38 RBI. This is Martinez’s first season in the American Association after spending the previous four seasons in the Can-Am League and Atlantic League and appearing with four different clubs. Martinez was a 46th round pick of the San Francisco Giants in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, and he spent 2009 with the Short-Season Class A Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Northwest League. In 2010, Martinez played for the Class A Augusta GreenJackets of the South Atlantic League before joining the independent ranks in 2011.

Amarillo, now 26-29 on the season, opens a home series with the Grand Prairie AirHogs tonight at 7:05 p.m.
