Gary SouthShore 6, Winnipeg 5

SS Zac Mitchell (pictured) was the hero Sunday as he registered five RBI including a three-run walkoff homerun to give the Gary SouthShore RailCats a 6-5 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The Goldeyes started out hot and claimed a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the RailCats started chipping away in the second inning. After CF Drew Martinez, who was 2-for-4, singled in a run, Mitchell hit his first homerun of the game – a two run shot – to draw the RailCats within a run.

Winnipeg scored in the fourth to make the score 5-3 and that’s where it stood until the bottom of the ninth. With two outs in the ninth 3B Brian Kolb, who finished 3-for-4, singled and so did Martinez making Mitchell the winning run. His walkoff homerun was his second roundtripper of the night and of the season.

 

Sioux City 2, Wichita 0

Sioux City got a gem from starter Jason Jarvis as the Explorers blanked the Wichita Wingnuts 2-0. Jarvis went the distance on the bump and scattered seven hits and struck out two batters in the shutout performance. The win improves him to 5-3 in nine starts this year with a 2.64 ERA.

The Sioux City bats only handed him a pair of runs to work with but that was all he needed. The Explorers scored in the first inning when SS Leugim Barroso tagged up from third. They scored again in the fifth an RBI single from LF Sam Judah. C Alberto Espinosa had a game high three hits. For the Wingnuts both 3B Abel Nieves and LF Jared McDonald had 2-for-3 games.

 

Lincoln 6, El Paso 5

With a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth by 2B David Espinosa, the Lincoln Saltdogs walked off on the El Paso Diablos 6-5. The game was tied at five going into the bottom of the ninth inning after the Diablos tied the score in the top of the eighth. CF Dan Carroll started the frame by drawing a walk. He then stole second and advanced to third on an error. Espinosa, who was 2-for-5 brought him home to end the game.

Carroll also had two hits in the game as well as a pair of runs and a pair of RBI. Saltdog SS Yasel Gomez finished with a team-high three hits. For the Diablos, RF Brian Joynt posted three hits and two runs and DH Thomas McAlpine was 2-for-3 and hit his first homerun of the season.

 

Grand Prairie 8, Newark 5

The Grand Prairie AirHogs shot past the Newak Bear in an interleague game with the help of a seven-run fourth inning. The AirHogs held a one-run lead going in to the fourth but after sending 11 batters to the plate in the fourth they blew the game open. Grand Prairie notched seven runs on just three hits in the inning to take a 8-0 lead. 1B Andres Rodriguez started off the inning with a walk, he scored when CF Kenny Held hit a ground rule double.

Rodriguez doubled in a pair of runs later in the inning and had a team high two hits in the game. The Bears fought back with five runs in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t draw any closer. For Newark, both SS Bridger Hunt and LF Jamar Walton were 3-for-5.

 

Amarillo 8, Laredo 5

Eight different Amarillo Sox racked up 15 hits as they downed the Laredo Lemurs 8-5. Both LF David Peralta and C Chris Grossman were 3-for-5 with an RBI – Peralta scored twice. Three other Sox had multi-hit games including 3B Brandon Jones who hit his sixth homerun of the season.

For the Lemurs, 1B Mike Sheridan and 2B Harrison Kain were both 2-for-4 and Kain had a team-high two RBI. The Sox put eight runs on the board with four two-run innings while all of Laredo’s runs came in the seventh inning. Starter Jason Johnson was credited with the win for his 6.0 inning outing.
