September 1 Night Box Scores
Sioux City 2, St. Paul 1
With the scored tied in the top of the ninth inning 2B Anthony Kaskadden (pictured) came up huge for the Sioux City Explorers and provided the game-winning homerun as they topped the St. Paul Saints 2-1. Kaskadden came up with none on and one out in the ninth and turned on a 1-1 delivery and sent it out of the park to slide the Explorers out in front.
Reliever Jimmer Kennedy came in and sealed the deal in the bottom of the ninth by sitting the Saints down in order. St. Paul’s starter Anthony Claggett pitched a strong game in the losing effort and had given up just one hit in the game before Kaskadden came up in the ninth. Claggett went the distance for the Saints and struck out three.
Reliever John Holdzkom was credited with the win for worked the eighth inning and registering a pair of strikeouts.
Wichita 4, Kansas City 3
With two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning the Wichita Wingnuts took control of the game with the Kansas City T-Bones and claimed a 4-3. Five batters in the Wichita lineup had multi-hit games, led by a 3-for-4 performance by RF Madison Beaird. Leadoff man SS Ryan Khoury, 1B C.J. Ziegler, 3B Abel Nieves and C Johnny Bowden all had two hits in the game.
Bowden was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a homerun and Nieves accounted for the other two runs batted in. For the T-Bones both LF Joey Gathright and 2B K.J. Miramontes had a pair of hits.
Though he didn’t earn a decision, Wichita starter Anthony Capra picked up 10 strikeouts in just six innings. Reliever Erik Lambe was tabbed as the winner for throwing two hitless innings and Josh Dew earned the save.
Quebec 6, Laredo 2
After falling behind early, the Quebec Capitales came back with a big push in the sixth inning and went on to beat the Laredo Lemurs 6-2. Laredo took the lead in the first inning when SS Jimmy Mojica – who went 3-for-4 with an RBI – scored on an error. They extended that lead in the third when OF Danny Poma scored on a singled by Mojica. Poma was 2-for-5 in the game.
But the Capitales flipped the switch in the sixth inning and mounted a five-run rally to take the lead for good. 2B Sebastien Boucher brought in the first run with a single and DH Rene Leveret immediately followed suit with another single to bring another run across. 3B Josue Peley and LF Josh Garton added RBI singles of their own to round out the rally. Peley and Garton were both 2-for-4 on the night.
Starter Shawn Smith was the winner on the mound as he threw 6.2 innings, allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out seven Lemurs.
Grand Prairie 7, Lincoln 6
After giving up three runs and the lead in the top of the seventh inning, the Grand Prairie AirHogs responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning and clung to that lead to turn it into a 7-6 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs. The AirHogs held a 4-3 lead going into the seventh but 2B David Espinosa soon changed that.
Espinosa, who was 2-for-5, singled in a pair of runs to take the lead and then scored on a singled by RF Brian Joynt later in the inning. Joynt went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game.
C Angel Flores, who went 2-for-4 on the night, got things started in the bottom half of the inning as he singled in 2B Ryan Pineda. SS Yasutsugu Nishimoto brought in the game winning run with a single later in the inning.
The win for the AirHogs is their fifth in a row and keeps them one game in front of Amarillo in the South Division.
