Kansas City 5, Joplin 3 (Completion of suspended game from June) – Box
The Kansas City T-Bones held off a late push from the Joplin Blasters to win 5-3 in a completion of a suspended game from back in June. The T-Bones had taken a commanding 5-1 lead in the eighth inning with a C Brian Erie two-RBI double, but 3B Jairo Perez blasted a two-run homer for Joplin to cut the lead, but the Blasters would score no more. Earlier in the game, 3B-C Carlos Ramirez had hit a solo homer for Joplin, and CF Robby Kuzdale hit a two-run shot.
Jared Messer picked up the win after pitching five innings and allowing just a single run. Joplin’s Matt Swilley pitched four scoreless innings.
Kansas City 7, Joplin 3 (Regularly scheduled game – 7 innings) – Box
For the second time on Wednesday, the Kansas City T-Bones defeated the Joplin Blasters, this time by the score of 7-3. Joplin started out with a promising RBI double in the first inning from Jairo Perez and then Oscar Mesa solo homer in the third, but then it cooled off. In the fourth, the T-Bones scored six to take a commanding lead and didn’t look back. Sergio Leon led the T-Bones with three RBIs on the night.
Neither pitcher was particularly outstanding, though there was some solid relief pitching. Derek Loera tossed a perfect 1.1 innings for Kansas City, and Aaron Baker followed that up with one scoreless inning.
St. Paul 6, Lincoln 0 – Box
The St. Paul Saints dominated the Lincoln Saltdogs 6-0 with a gem of a performance from starting pitcher Robert Coe. He pitched the complete game and allowed just a single hit and a single walk to the Saltdogs. Coe also had five strikeouts. The run support for Coe came in the third inning with a three-run homer from 1B Angelo Songco. He finished the game 2-for-4 with one run and four RBIs. RF Mike Kvasnicka added a solo home run for St. Paul in the fifth inning.
The lone hit for Lincoln came from 3B Curt Smith.
Quebec 6, Wichita 2 – Box
The Quebec Capitales allowed zero earned runs and received a 4-for-4 night from RF Alexei Bell in a 6-2 win over the Wichita Wingnuts. Mark Hardy received the win for Quebec after seven innings where he struck out seven and allowed no earned runs. Jon Fitzsimmons pitched a scoreless final two innings. LF Tyler Young’s two-RBI single for Quebec was one of the biggest plays of the night.
No Wichita player recorded multiple hits, but five different batters each had one. Scott Kuzminsky pitched great in relief. He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed zero runs.
Amarillo 7, Laredo 1 – Box
The Amarillo Thunderheads cruised to an easy 7-1 win over the Laredo Lemurs after scoring four times in the first inning. Though Laredo’s DH Denis Phipps led off the game with a solo homer, Amarillo responded quite well. Errors allowed two runs after DH Stefan Gartrell’s single put the ball in play. A putout and then LF Geraldo Valentin’s RBI single scored the final runs of the inning, which was all the Thunderheads needed. Every batter in Amarillo’s lineup recorded at least one hit.
On the mound, Alex Koronis shined for Amarillo. Koronis, who picked up the win, pitched eight innings, struck out nine and allowed just one earned run. Richard Barrett finished the game with a scoreless ninth.
Grand Prairie 13, Sioux Falls 4 – Box
Although Grand Prairie just edged out Sioux Falls 15-14 in hits, it was the AirHogs that could actually turn those hits into runs. Grand Prairie won 13-4 over Sioux Falls in what looks to be a lopsided affair. C Zane Chavez led the AirHogs at the plate with a 4-for-5 performance with three runs. 3B Ridge Hoopii-Haslam went 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBIs and one walk.
On the mound, Grand Prairie starter Zachary Dando pitched a quality start. Jason Jarvis and Sam Martin came in relief for Dando and each pitched a scoreless inning.
As for Sioux Falls, SS Jerome Pena was the clear bright spot for the team. He went 4-for-5 with one run and two RBIs.
Sioux City 8, Fargo-Moorhead 2 – Box
Two home runs in a three-run inning propelled the Sioux City Explorers to an 8-2 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. In the third inning, ahead 2-1, DH Brock Kjeldgaard led off with a solo homer for Sioux City. A few batters later, C Matt Koch launched a two-run shot to give a nice cushion for a lead. Koch led the Explorers at the plate: 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Four other players, including Kjeldgaard, each had two hits. Sioux City also received a great start from Ryan Zimmerman, the winning pitcher of this game. Zimmerman pitched seven innings, struck out nine batters and allowed just one earned run.
Three different RedHawks recorded multiple hits. Reliever Jonathan Chudy deserves praise for his scoreless three innings that he pitched to close out the game.
Winnipeg 7, Gary SouthShore 4?11 Innings) – Box
The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored three runs in the 11th inning and came away as victors over the Gary SouthShore RailCats. In the 11th, with a man on second base to begin the inning due to league rules, DH Luis Alen drove in the first run. Several batters later, LF Adam Heisler hit a single to bring home Alen, then an RBI double from RF Tillman Pugh was the cherry on top for Winnipeg. Jailen Peguero pitched two innings of scoreless relief and picked up the win.
C Michael Vaughn led the RailCats in hitting with three hits. Starting pitcher for Gary SouthShore, Ryan Quigley, pitched six innings and allowed just one earned run.
