BENCOMO BECOMES FOURTH WINGNUT SOLD IN 2015, HEADED TO TWINS

Wic Bencomo

The Wichita Wingnuts may be independent, but playing at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium has quickly become a fast track to affiliated baseball. RHP Omar Bencomo has become the fourth 2015 Wingnut to be sold, as he is headed to the Minnesota Twins organization. The Twins plan to assign him to the Class A Advanced Fort Myers Miracle in the Florida State League. The Miracle close a home series with the St. Lucie Mets tonight at 7:05 p.m. Eastern time.

Bencomo has had two stints with the Wingnuts this year, having also appeared with the Laredo Lemurs. Overall, he is 6-1 with a 3.19 ERA in 13 starts. Bencomo has struck out 72 and only walked 16 in 84.1 innings. He was named the American Association Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 14 while with the Lemurs. In a start against the Kansas City T-Bones, Bencomo tossed eight shutout innings, scattering five hits and no walks, and striking out five in a 4-0 win. That followed a start against the Wingnuts in which he had logged eight innings, allowing just one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out four. Laredo won 6-1.

His best start in a Wingnuts uniform came just last week at the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League. Bencomo threw eight innings, allowing just one run on three hits and no walks while striking out eight batters. Wichita took the 3-1 win. His season high in strikeouts is nine, a mark he has achieved twice, on July 15 in a 502 win at the Grand Prairie AirHogs and on July 20 in a 5-3 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries.

This is Bencomo’s first season in the American Association after playing in Venezuela in 2013 and 2014. He spent three years with the Tampa Bay Rays system in the United States, playing from 2009-2011. Bencomo’s best season was in 2009, when he had a 3.47 ERA with the Rookie level Princeton Rays in the Appalachian League. He also played for the Short-Season Class A Hudson Valley Renegades in the New York-Penn League in 2010 and the Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods of the Midwest League in 2011.

He becomes the fourth Wingnut to be sold this year, following LHP Jarret Leverett (San Francisco), INF Alberto Gonzalez (Detroit) and RHP Dakota Watts (Texas). Wichita continues its swing through the Can-Am League tonight, taking on the Quebec Capitales at 7:05 p.m. Eastern time. That game will be available live and for free at www.canamleague.tv.
