HERNANDEZ REPEATS AS PITCHER OF THE WEEK

DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Winnipeg Goldeyes LHP Nick Hernandez (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 7.

This marks the second straight Pitcher of the Week nod for Hernandez, who also won the award last Monday. This week, Hernandez only made one start, but dazzled in his home debut for 2015. On Saturday, June 6, the former University of Tennessee southpaw took the mound at Shaw Park in Winnipeg against the Joplin Blasters and tossed eight no-hit innings. The only blemish against Hernandez came in the eighth inning when he issued a walk. After a batter reached on an error, Hernandez recorded the final out of the frame and ended his night. In all, he struck out eight Blasters in the outing. The Goldeyes’ bullpen made the game interesting in the ninth, but Winnipeg held on to win 4-3.

On the season, Hernandez is now 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA over four starts. In 25.1 innings, he has struck out 22 and only walked four.

Even before this season, American Association awards are nothing new for the product of Madison, Tenn. He won the Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week award for the weeks ending June 29 and August 17, 2014. To add to those nods, Hernandez won two of the three Rawlings American Association Pitcher of the Month honors last season, taking home the hardware for the months of June and August. Now in his second year with the Goldeyes, Hernandez was 12-2 with a 3.05 ERA last season. In 120.2 innings, he struck out 93 and only walked 22.

Before taking his talents to the independent ranks, Hernandez played three seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies system. He reached as high as Advanced A with the Phillies, his 2013 campaign with the Clearwater Threshers of the Florida State League. That season, he struck out 86 over 18 starts for Clearwater.

The Goldeyes will begin a series at the Lincoln Saltdogs on Monday in Lincoln, Neb. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Haymarket Park. The whole series will be shown live and for free at www.americanassociationbaseball.tv.
