DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Winnipeg Goldeyes LHP Nick Hernandez (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 31.
Hernandez made two starts last week for the Goldeyes, allowing one run over 12.1 innings across the two starts. He first toed the rubber on Tuesday, May 26, working 6.1 shutout innings against the Wichita Wingnuts. The former University of Tennessee Volunteer scattered seven hits while striking out six Wingnuts. He did not walk a batter in the start, which resulted in a no decision. Unfortunately for Hernandez, the Wingnuts won the game 1-0 in 10 innings.
Hernandez returned to the mound on Sunday, May 31 against the Joplin Blasters in Joplin, Mo. The southpaw took another no decision, but logged six strong innings. He allowed one run on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. The Blasters eventually won the ballgame 3-2 thanks to a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth.
On the season, Hernandez is now 0-1 with a 2.07 ERA over three starts. He has struck out 14 batters and has only walked three over 17.1 innings.
American Association awards are nothing new for the product of Madison, Tenn. He won the Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week award for the weeks ending June 29 and August 17, 2014. To add to those nods, Hernandez won two of the three Rawlings American Association Pitcher of the Month honors last season, taking home the hardware for the months of June and August. Now in his second year with the Goldeyes, Hernandez was 12-2 with a 3.05 ERA last season. In 120.2 innings, he struck out 93 and only walked 22.
Before taking his talents to the independent ranks, Hernandez played three seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies system. He reached as high as Advanced A with the Phillies, his 2013 campaign with the Clearwater Threshers of the Florida State League. That season, he struck out 86 over 18 starts for Clearwater.
The Goldeyes will play their home opener at Shaw Park on Tuesday, June 2. Winnipeg will host the Sioux Falls Canaries, with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. Central time. That game, like all Goldeyes home games, will be shown live and for free at www.americanassociationbaseball.tv.
