AUGUST 26 RECAPS
St. Paul 4, Lincoln 3- Box
The Saints held off a furious charge from the Saltdogs, who scored all three runs in the bottom of the ninth, and took a 4-3 win. 1B David Bergin hit a solo home run in the second inning for the Saints, and that run would hold up until the eighth. CF Alonzo Harris hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0, and he stole second and scored on an error to account for the game’s third run. In the ninth, 3B Nate Hanson added what turned out to be an important insurance run with a solo home run.
RHP Mark Hamburger (pictured) picked up the win with 8.1 innings of work, striking out eight. He was pulled with a 4-1 lead, but Lincoln DH Curt Smith greeted Saints RHP Ryan Rodebaugh with a two-run home run. Rodebaugh was able to settle in and picked up the last two outs for the save.
Smith had two hits on the night for the Saltdogs.
Laredo 4, Joplin 3 (Doubleheader Game One- 7 innings)- Box
The Lemurs plated four runs in the first three innings and held on to take a 4-3 win over the Blasters. DH Ty Morrison opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first, and C Zane Chavez and LF Burt Reynolds hit solo homers of their own in the second. Morrison hit an RBI single in the third to account for Laredo’s final run.
Morrison collected two of Laredo’s six hits in the win, leading the way for the Lemurs.
RHP Manny Martinez tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. RHP Jeff Inman allowed a run in the ninth, but kept the Lemurs in front and picked up the win.
SS Alex Polston had two hits and two RBI for Joplin.
Joplin 6, Laredo 5 (Doubleheader Game Two- 7 innings)- Box
The Blasters got even against the Lemurs with a walk-off 6-5 win in the doubleheader nightcap. 3B Sergio Leon led off the bottom of the seventh, which began at a 5-5 tie, with a single. One batter later, 2B Mitch Glasser hit a game-winning RBI double. Earlier in the game, DH Geraldo Valentin hit a first-inning solo home run, and would score on a two-run home run from 1B Edwin Gomez in the third. Leon and LF Axel Johnson added RBI singles in the second.
RHP Roby Romero tossed a scoreless seventh for the win for the Blasters.
For Laredo, 3B Abel Nieves was 2-for-3 with his third home run of the year.
Fargo-Moorhead 4, Sioux Falls 3- Box
The RedHawks scored twice in the second and twice in the fifth, and took a 4-3 win over the Canaries. RF Keury De La Cruz got the RedHawks off to a fast start with a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the first. Sioux Falls would rally back to take a 3-2 advantage into the fifth, but the RedHawks jumped in front for good. SS Mike Gilmartin collected an RBI groundout to tie the game, and one batter later, CF Kes Carter hit a solo home run to give Fargo-Moorhead the lead.
Carter and De La Cruz had two hits apiece for the RedHawks in the win. RHP Jose Almarante struck out six over eight innings. He scattered seven hits and did not walk a batter as he allowed three runs, only two earned, and picked up the win. RHP Colton Reavis hurled a scoreless ninth for the save.
For the Canaries, LF Cameron Monger was 2-for-3.
Wichita 7, Texas 1- Box
The Wingnuts raced past the AirHogs 7-1 thanks to a five-run first. LF TJ Mittelstaedt opened the scoring with an RBI double, and 1B Matt Chavez drove in the second run on a sacrifice fly. Mittelstaedt himself scored on an RBI single by C Martin Medina. CF Harrison Kain punctuated the spurt with a two-run home run that drove in Medina. 3B Zack Cox plated the final two runs with a two-RBI double in the third for the Wingnuts.
Cox’s three hits led the way for the Wingnuts, while Medina and 2B Christian Stringer had two hits apiece.
RHP Tyler Kane twirled five innings for the win, allowing an unearned run on five hits and no walks. He struck out three.
For Texas, LF Kenny Peoples-Walls was 2-for-3.
Sioux City 7, Winnipeg 5- Box
Five runs in the top of the eighth inning helped the Explorers past the Goldeyes 7-5. DH Michael Abreu drove in the first run of the frame with an RBI single, and a second run scored on an error. The eventual winning tying and winning runs came across on a two-RBI triple off the bat of CF Tim Colwell. SS Nate Samson drove in the final run on a fielder’s choice that scored Colwell.
Five different Explorers players had two hits apiece in the win, while Colwell’s two RBI were a team high. RHP PJ Francescon struck out a batter in 1.1 innings of relief, picking up the win. RHP Rob Wort recorded the final five outs to earn the save.
For Winnipeg, RF Josh Romanski was 3-for-4 with a double.
Gary SouthShore 8, Kansas City 3- Box
The RailCats plated six runs in the first inning and never looked back, beating the T-Bones 8-3. 1B Alex Crosby opened the scoring with an RBI single, and two more runs scored on a two-RBI double off the bat of C Jaime Del Valle. 2B Andy DeJesus hit a three-run home run to blow the game wide open. DH Frank Martinez hit an RBI single in the second, and Crosby would drive in another run on an RBI single in the fourth.
Crosby and SS Jarred Mederos had two hits each for the RailCats. RHP Richard Castillo struck out five over 6.1 innings to pick up the win for Gary SouthShore.
For Kansas City, DH Anthony Gallas was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
