Winnipeg 6, Fargo-Moorhead 5
A closely fought game between the Goldeyes and the RedHawks ended in a 6-5 victory for Winnipeg after three runs in the bottom of the eighth allowed them to narrowly edge Fargo-Moorhead. C Luis Alen was the hero, going 3-for-4 with a run, two doubles, and three RBIs. His RBI double in the eighth gave the Goldeyes the eventual game-winner. The RedHawks were able to score twice in the ninth and bring the deficit to just one, but a strikeout with the bases loaded ended the game with Fargo-Moorhead falling short of a comeback.
RHP Matthew Rusch (pictured) led the Goldeyes through 6.1 innings on the mound, pitching nine strikeouts and allowing just two runs.
Grand Prairie 4, Lincoln 1
Grand Prairie defeated Lincoln 4-1 after a number of pitchers combined to hold the Saltdogs scoreless for eight innings. RHP Aaron Wilkerson, RHP Stephen Nikonchik, RHP David Quinowski, and RHP Chase Johnson each had limited stints on the mound, but together allowed just three hits and struck out seven batters to keep Lincoln from crossing home plate.
No single batter had a remarkable performance, but the AirHogs added a few early runs by stringing together several hits. All but two of Grand Prairie’s batters were able to get on base at least once. The AirHogs established a lead in the bottom of the second when SS Yasutsugu Nishimoto brought two runs in with a single and that was all they needed to overcome the Saltdogs. Following a double to start the ninth inning, RF Brian Joynt hit an RBI single to put Lincoln on the board before the final out.
Amarillo’s loss earlier in the day meant that Grand Prairie had already clinched the South Division.
Wichita 5, Kansas City 4
The T-Bones scored first, but a three-run comeback in the fourth gave the Wingnuts the cushion they needed to secure a 5-4 victory against Kansas City. A perfect 4-for-4 game for 2B Jake Kahaulelio included two RBIs that finally gave them the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Then, SS Ryan Khoury’s run in the seventh proved to be the game-winner that Wichita needed in order to survive a late pair of runs that Kansas City added in the eighth.
RF Luis Rivera went 2-for-3 for the T-Bones and contributed two runs in a solid performance, despite their loss. LHP James Giulietti pitched five innings for the Wingnuts and allowed just three hits and two runs– a performance that would earn him the win for his team.
