Gilliam, Hendrickson Lead First-Place Monarchs to Big Weekend

Batter

The Kansas City Monarchs swept the American Association’s Carbliss weekly awards for the week ending 6/8, with Isiah Gilliam and Josh Hendrickson winning batter and pitcher of the week respectively.

Gilliam tied for the league-lead with 11 total hits during the week, including two home runs, five doubles and eight runs batted in. He also walked five times and scored six runs himself.

He did so in just five games thanks to the Sunday game against Winnipeg being suspended. However he led the Monarchs to wins in the first two games of that weekend set with home runs in consecutive nights.

This is year two for Gilliam in Kansas City after he hit .333 with them in 31 games a year ago. He previously reached as high as the AAA level in both the Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners organizations.

On the pitching side, Saturday night was a special outing for Hendrickson as he went six no-hit innings against Winnipeg with a whopping 15 strikeouts.

The only base runners he allowed were on three walks. He was able to get out of a jam in that final sixth inning with two runners on.

Hendrickson is new to the league after previously spending five seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, reaching as high as AAA. He is now 3-1 on the season with a 3.37 ERA in five starts.

Carbliss is the founding partner of the American Association.
