MOORHEAD, MINN. – The Kansas City T-Bones have sold the contract of INF Darnell Sweeney to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization, the American Association announced Wednesday, June 12. Sweeney is the 26th American Association player to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization in 2019.
Sweeney signed with the T-Bones in February after spending the 2018 season between the majors and Triple-A. The former major leaguer played two games with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018 and played 37 games with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015. With Kansas City in 2019, the switch hitter is hitting .288 with four home runs and nine RBIs
Sweeney began his professional career in 2012 after being drafted in the 13th round of the MLB Draft out of the University of Central Florida. Sweeney spent parts of four seasons in the Dodgers’ organization. In 116 games at Triple-A in 2015, Sweeney hit .271 with nine home runs and 49 RBIs while stealing 32 bases. In that same season, Sweeney was dealt along with another minor leaguer to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for 2B Chase Utley.
