DEAN’S HOME RUN IN THE 10TH MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Wichita 6, Joplin 4 (10 Innings) Box Score

Wichita DH Brent Dean hit a two-run home run in the top of the tenth inning and the Wingnuts’ defense took care of business in the bottom of the frame give Wichita a 6-4 win over the Joplin Blasters in extra innings.

The game was tied at four after nine innings but the Wingnuts didn’t waste much time in settling the score. RF David Espinosa led off the top of the tenth inning with a single and after he was sacrificed over to second base Dean came up and belted out what turned into the game-winning home run. Espinosa led all batters with three hits in the game and Dean had a game-high two RBI.

In the bottom of the tenth, 3B Omar Luna starting things off with a single but 2B Mitch Glasser bounced into a 5-4-3 double play in the next at bat. SS Maikol Gonzalez flew out to end the game in the next at bat. Luna, Glasser and LF Yasser Gomez each had two hits in the game for the Blasters.

Reliever Matt Nevarez was credited with the win as he pitched the ninth and tenth innings and allowed just two hits while keeping the Blasters off of the score board.

Sioux Falls 3, Sioux City 0 — Box Score

The Sioux Falls Canaries allowed just six hits as they shut out the Sioux City Explorers 3-0.

Starting pitcher Miguel Pena earned the win on Saturday as he tossed seven innings and scattered five hits. Pena walked just one batter and had two strikeouts. Reliever Cameron McVey worked a perfect eighth inning and reliever Chase Johnson picked up the save as he finished things off in the ninth.

Offensively, seven different Canaries registered hits in the game and LF Brian Humphries as well as 3B R.J. Perucki had two hits. Humphries and C Richard Stock each had an RBI. For the Explorers, 1B Brock Kjelgaard and 2B Ryan Court posted a pair of hits.

 

St. Paul 6, Fargo-Moorhead 1 — Box Score

The St. Paul Saints took care of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 6-1 with the help of three RBI from 3B Steve Nikorak.

The RedHawks broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning as 2B Frank Salerno scored on a single from RF Joe Dunigan. But the Saints took the lead in the bottom of the frame with two runs on an error and two more on a home run from Nikorak. The Saints added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as C Vince DeFazio singled home DH Michael Antonio and then scored on a double from Nikorak.

St. Paul starting pitcher Kramer Sneed earned the win as he went six innings and scattered three hits while allowing just the one earned run. He struck out three and walked just two. For the RedHawks, 3B Brent Peterson was the only Fargo-Moorhead batter to have more than one hit as he went 2-for-3.

 

 

Quebec 3, Gary South Shore 2  Box Score

The Quebec Capitales picked up a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on to topple the Gary South Shore Railcats 3-2 in an interleague contest.

Quebec took the lead in the top of the fifth inning as 3B Tyler Young hit a sacrifice fly that scored CF Kalian Sams. The Railcats responded in the bottom of the sixth as CF Jon Jones and DH Zac Mitchell both scored after RF Drew Martinez blasted a double that troubled the left fielder. But in the top of the seventh, the Capitales took back the lead for good as Sams scored his second run of the night and DH Jean-Luc Blaquiere scored his first.

Sams went 3-for-4 in the game to lead both teams and Blaquiere went 1-for-3. For the Railcats, both Jones and Martinez had two hits in the game. Pitcher Shaun Ellis picked up the win in relief as he pitched 2.2 innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) on two hits.

 

Laredo 4, Amarillo 2 (Final/5 Innings – rain) — Box Score

The Laredo Lemurs took control of their contest with the visiting Amarillo Thunderhead with four runs in the first inning and ended up claiming a 4-2 win in a rain-shortened contest.

The rain started in the bottom of the third but the tarp didn’t come out until after the top of the fourth. 1B Matt Padgett’s RBI single in the first inning got things started for the Lemurs. SS Abel Nieves scored in the next at-bat as RF Denis Phipps doubled then Padgett scored later in the inning on a fielder’s choice. Phipps rounded out the rally as he scored on an error.

The Thunderheads chipped away with a pair of runs in the top of the second on solo home run from DH Rene Leveret and 1B Danny Stienstra but that was all the damage they caused.

 

Winnipeg at Grand Prairie – Postponed (Weather)

The game between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and the Grand Prairie AirHogs has been postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as a part of double header Sunday starting at 12:05 p.m. Central Time.
