Chicago 4, Sioux Falls 2 — Box Score
The Chicago Dogs earned the first win in franchise history on Saturday by taking care of Sioux Falls 4-2 in the second game of the season-opening series.
The Dogs opened the game with an RBI single from CF Kyle Gaedele in the top of the first inning. RF Joe Benson hit his first home run of the season in the fourth inning to double the Dogs’ lead. Things heated up in the closing innings as Chicago added another run in the top of the inning and RF Chris Grayson homered for the Canaries. C Wilfredo Rodriguez bounced out to score DH Craig Maddox in the top of the ninth, pushing the lead to 4-1.
RF Chris Jacobs singled to score SS Blake Schmit in the bottom of the ninth but reliever Kaohi Downing halted the rally there and earned the save. Starting pitcher Kylin Turnbull picked up the win for tossing six innings without allowing a run on just two hits.
Cleburne 6, Winnipeg 4 — Box Score
After falling behind early, the Cleburne Railroaders rallied to top the Winnipeg Goldeyes 6-4.
Winnipeg took the early lead by scoring two runs in the top of third inning; the first in the form of a solo home run from 3B Josh Mazzola. That lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth when 2B Jose Sermo scored as LF Grant Heyman reached on an error. But the Railroaders took over in the bottom of the innings as 2B Angelo Gumbs singled home CF KC Huth and 3B Patrick Palmeiro blasted a two-run home run to tie the score. A LF Trevor Sealy RBI single later in the inning gave Cleburne the lead for good.
The Railroaders tacked on another run in the fifth and SS Alex Polston added a sac fly in the eighth to preserve the win. 1B Levi Scott had a game-high three hits for the Railroaders.
Wichita 5, Kansas City 2 — Box Score
The Wichita Wingnuts plated five runs in the third inning and that proved to be enough as they held off the Kansas City T-Bones 5-2.
2B Ryne Willard pushed the first run across with a one-out single that scored SS Leo Vargas. Willard scored when RF Zach Nehrir was hit by a pitch with the bases load and 1B Abel Nieves scored the same way when C John Nester was hit in the next at-bat. Logan Trowbridge capped the rally with a two-RBI single to left field. The Wingnuts held the T-Bones scoreless until the final frame when DH Cal Towey doubled home LF Adam Walker and C Adrian Nieto added an RBI groundout but the comeback attempt ended there.
Nieto led the T-Bones with two hits while Willard, Nieves and Vargas all had a pair for the Wingnuts. Starting pitcher Casey Harman was tabbed as the winner for working six scoreless innings and giving up just three hits while also striking out three batters.
Fargo-Moorhead 7, Texas 3 — Box Score
A five-run sixth inning propelled the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to a 7-3 win against the Texas AirHogs on Saturday evening.
The game was tied 1-1 after five complete innings but the RedHawks quickly flipped the game on its head. DH Keury De La Cruz and C Charlie Valerio hit back-to-back home runs off different pitchers to kickstart the rally. 1B Joe DeLuca and SS Leobaldo Pina each scored when 2B Maikol Gonzalez reached on an error. LF Brennan Metzger scored when CF Devan Ahart lifted a sac fly in the next at bat.
Ahart and Kruz each had two hits for the RedHawks while 3B Stewart Ijames had three hits to pace the AirHogs. On the bump, starting pitcher D.J. Brown picked up the win after seven innings on the rubber where he gave up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
St. Paul 8, Gary SouthShore 3 — Box Score
The St. Paul Saints fell behind early but rallied behind 16 hits on the way to an 8-3 win against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Saturday afternoon.
Gary scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the first inning as 3B Garrett Copeland popped an RBI double, DH Colin Willis pitched in an RBI groundout and Copeland touched home thanks to an error. But the Saints started chipping away at the lead in the next frame and by middle of the fourth they had tied the game. St. Paul took the lead in the top of the seventh inning when DH Jayce Boyd singled home LF Richard Prigatano and RF Max Murphy. SS Noah Perio Jr. added an RBI single in the next at-bat.
For the game, Murphy, Perio Jr., 3B Dante Bichette Jr. and 1B Brady Shoemaker each had three hits and Shoemaker added three RBI. For Gary, Copeland went 4-for-4 with a double.
Sioux City 14, Lincoln 6 — Box Score
The Sioux City Explorers powered past the Lincoln Saltdogs 14-6 by scoring in seven of the nine innings and racking up 17 hits.
Nine different Explorers recorded hits on the night and five of them had multi-hit games. DH Daniel Jackson, 3B Jay Baum and 2B Nelson Ward each had three hits and both Baum and Ward had a pair of RBIs. CF Jay Austin and LF Luis Durango each had a pair of base knocks and Austin had a game-high four RBI.
Lincoln also tallied its fair share of hits – picking up 12 in the contest – and both 2B Christian Ibarra and CF Chad Hinshaw had four-hit nights.
