DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Winnipeg Goldeyes RHP Edwin Carl (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending September 4.
Carl was masterful in his final start of the regular season. Thursday night at the St. Paul Saints, he threw seven shutout innings, scattering four hits and a walk. He struck out eight in helping lead Winnipeg to a 5-0 win.
Carl has played a key role in helping the Goldeyes to the American Association North Division championship. He finishes 2017 at 9-4 with a 4.60 ERA, striking out 103 opposing hitters and walking only 46 over 117.1 innings.
The Farmington, N.M. resident is in his third season with Winnipeg, having posted a 6-1 record and 2.10 ERA in 2015, striking out 62 and walking only 14 in 55.2 innings. He followed up that effort in 2016 with a 10-6 mark and 4.69 ERA in 20 starts. Carl was named the Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 12, 2016 and September 7, 2015.
He had previously pitched with the Frontier League’s Schaumburg Boomers in 2015, making 11 starts. Carl did not play professionally in 2014, but had spent 2010-2013 with the Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Dodgers systems. He pitched as high up as Class AA Northwest Arkansas, where he appeared in 25 games in 2013. Carl was originally a non-drafted free agent signee with the Royals in 2010.
The Goldeyes will open their playoff run on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. Central time when they travel to face the Lincoln Saltdogs in game one of a best-of-five series. Game two takes place in Lincoln on Thursday at 6:45 p.m., and the series will shift to Winnipeg on Saturday. Game three is set for Saturday at 6:00 p.m., while Sunday’s game four (if necessary) is at 4:00 p.m., and game five (if necessary) is at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
