The Sioux Falls Canaries have swept the Pointstreak batter and pitcher of the week awards for the week ending 7/14, as infielder Josh Rehwaldt and starter Tanner Brown earn the honors, the league announced Monday.
A starter in next week’s all-star game, Rehwaldt was the top run producer in the league this week. He went 10-for-23 at the plate (.435) with three doubles, one homer and eight RBI.
The highlight of his week came back on Wednesday when he hit a home run and drove in four runs in a 9-1 win for the Canaries against Gary-SouthShore.
This is Rehwaldt’s second season in Sioux Falls after he spent some time with them back in 2019. He spent the previous three seasons with the New Jersey Jackals of the Frontier League.
On the pitching side, his teammate in Brown made two great starts this week, totaling 14 innings and allowing just one earned run.
Brown’s first outing of the week was his best, going eight innings against the RailCats on Tuesday while striking out six and allowing one run. Then he followed that up with six shutout innings on Sunday against Winnipeg with seven punch-outs.
The local kid who played his college ball at Augustana in Sioux Falls is in his second year in the league and first with the Canaries. He is fourth in the AAPB with a 2.84 ERA and second in wins with seven.
Pointstreak is the official statistician of the American Association.
