MOORHEAD, MN- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Wichita Wingnuts’ RHP Travis Banwart (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending August 12.
Banwart threw eight shutout innings against the league’s highest scoring team, the Sioux City Explorers, to help the Wingnuts shutout the Explorers 3-0 on August 7. Coming into the contest, Sioux City had been blanked just twice all year, and hadn’t been shutout since June 24 against the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Banwart ended the night with three hits allowed, one walk, and seven strikeouts.
The seasoned righty is in his 12th professional season. Banwart began his professional career in 2007 after being drafted in the fourth round of the MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. The Wichita native has reached triple-A in seven different seasons. His most recent stint came in 2017 while pitching in the Cleveland Indians’ organization.
Banwart and his teammate OF Angel Reyes, the Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending August 12, are the first teammates in 2018 to sweep the weekly awards.
