Winnipeg 18, Wichita 2 (Game 5 – Winnipeg wins championship, 3-2) – Box

The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored nine runs in the second inning to take a 9-0 lead and would never look back as they defeated Wichita in game five, 18-2, to win their second consecutive American Association championship. Winnipeg pounded out 18 hits in the contest with six batters having multi-hit games. Goldeyes 1B Shawn Pleffner hit for the cycle going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBI while DH David Bergin added a home run and three RBI in a 3-for-4 night. Catcher Mason Katz also chipped in a blast, two runs and four RBI for Winnipeg.

Goldeyes starting pitcher Edwin Carl allowed two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings pitched to notch the win. Carl allowed three walks and five hits to go along with three strikeouts.

For Wichita, DH Matt Chavez went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

This is Winnipeg’s third overall American Association title.
