WINGNUTS JUMP TO EARLY LEAD AND WIN GAME ONE

Wichita 12, Winnipeg 7 (Game 1 – Wichita leads series, 1-0) – Box

The Wichita Wingnuts jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings of play and would cruise from there to a 12-7 victory over Winnipeg in game one of the American Association Championship Series. Wichita pounded out 14 hits in the contest with five batters having multi-hit games. Wingnuts 3B T.J. Mittelstaedt went 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBI while 1B Brent Clevlen added three hits in five at-bats and two runs batted in. Wichita SS Leo Vargas also chipped in two runs in a 3-for-4 night.

Wichita starting pitcher Danny Gutierrez allowed two earned runs over five innings pitched to notch his second victory of the postseason. Gutierrez gave up seven hits with six strikeouts.

For Winnipeg in the losing effort, C Mason Katz went a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI.

Game two of the best-of-five series will be Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
