WICHITA’S PAUL SMYTH HEADED TO ARIZONA

Smyth

Durham, N.C. — The contract of Wichita Wingnuts RHP Paul Smyth was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks organization on Tuesday, the American Association announced.

Smyth joined the Wingnuts in August 2015 from Somerset of the Atlantic League; in 12 relief appearances with Wichita, the 28-year-old earned 7 saves, going 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 12 innings of work.

Previously, Smyth spent six seasons in the Oakland Athletics’ organization, reaching as high as Triple-A. He was a Pacific Coast League all-star in 2014 with Triple-A Sacramento, as part of a season in which he assembled a 3.05 ERA in 46 bullpen appearances.

The native of Templeton, Calif., was a 35th-round choice of Oakland in the 2009 draft out of the University of Kansas.

Smyth is the sixth Wichita player to have his contract purchased by a major league organization in 2015, and the fourth American Association player purchased by Arizona.
