Durham, N.C. — The contract of Cleburne Railroaders RHP Cortland Cox has been purchased by the Los Angeles Angels organization, the American Association announced on Thursday.

Cox was superb in his first season in independent baseball in 2017, going 4-2 with a 2.96 ERA in 37 relief appearances, striking out 66 hitters in 51.2 innings of work. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native limited lefthanders to a meager .161 batting average.

Previously, the 23-year-old spent four seasons in the Cleveland Indians’ organization, reaching as high as Double-A. Cox was chosen by the Indians in the 32nd round of the 2013 draft out of Riverside (Calif.) Community College.

Cox is the first player in Cleburne history to have his contract purchased by a major-league organization.
