TIGERS PURCHASE CONTRACT OF WICHITA 3B COX

Durham, N.C. — The contract of Wichita Wingnuts 3B Zack Cox has been purchased by the Detroit Tigers organization, the American Association announced on Wednesday.

Cox, 27, was superb in his first season with the Wingnuts in 2016, tying for second with 30 doubles, tying for third with 77 runs scored and finishing fifth with 122 hits to go along with 12 home runs and a .290 batting average.

Previously, Cox spent six seasons in the Miami and St. Louis organizations, spending time in Triple-A from 2012 to 2015. The Louisville, Ky., native was originally a first-round draft pick by the Cardinals out of the University of Arkansas.

Cox is the fourth Wichita player to have his contract purchased by a major-league organization in 2016, following:

  • RHP Derek Eitel, San Diego (now with Washington)
  • RHP Ryan Kussmaul, Arizona
  • LHP Alex Sogard, Baltimore
