DURHAM, NC – Currently riding a five-game win streak, the Sioux Falls Canaries have had a lot to be pleased with this week. Now, they have one more thing to celebrate, as OF Nick Van Stratten (left) and RHP Kyle Ruwe (right) have been named this week’s Pointstreak Hitter and Pitcher of the Week.
Van Stratten hit for average and power in Sioux Falls’ six games this week. On the power end, he totaled six extra-base hits with two home runs, two doubles and two triples. However, his average was even more impressive. The Canaries’ outfielder hit safely in each of the first five games this week, earning a weekly average of .565 (13-for-23). Van Stratten was never an easy out, either. The Birmingham, MO native did not strike out once all week. With his performance over the last six games, Van Stratten has seen his overall average jump to .358, placing him second in the American Association.
The Canaries have held their opponents to a grand total of four runs over their five-game winning streak, and Ruwe has been instrumental in accomplishing that feat. On Tuesday, the right-hander hurled a complete game shutout against Lincoln. Ruwe held the Saltdogs off the scoreboard over nine innings of work, allowing just five hits. The Canaries’ starter never faced more than five batters in a single inning that game, but that was not his only impressive outing this week. On Saturday, Ruwe picked up another win against Sioux City. He pitched 7.1 innings in that outing and held the Explorers to one run on six hits. Between those two starts, Ruwe’s ERA for the past week was a remarkably slim 0.06.
