2013 Semifinals: Game Three
Gary SouthShore 3, Fargo-Moorhead 1
Thanks to a complete-game, three-hit performance by starter Billy Spottiswood, the Gary SouthShore RailCats find themselves one win away from reaching the American Association Championship series. Spottiswood held the RedHawks’ offense to just one run and struck out five, en route to a 3-1 win at the U.S. Steel Yard. The victory gives Gary SouthShore a 2-1 series edge.
Spottiswood faltered early, giving up a solo home run to leadoff hitter Zach Penprase on the third pitch of the game. But, that was all the right-hander would surrender. Over the next nine innings, three more men reached base against Spottiswood and nobody advanced past first base. Spottiswood concluded his brilliant performance by retiring the last 15 men he faced.
RedHawks’ starter Brian Ernst also pitched admirably over eight innings, but the three runs he surrendered on one swing in the first inning were enough to down Fargo-Moorhead. The RailCats loaded the bases on a single, a walk and an error, bringing Craig Maddox to the plate. Maddox cleared the bases with a triple, giving Gary SouthShore a 3-1 lead. Both pitchers controlled the remainder of the game and the RailCats held on to win by that score.
