Sermo Drives in 15, Mazza Shuts Down DockHounds to Complete Sweep

Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks infielder José Sermo and Kane County Cougars starter Chris Mazza won the American Association’s Carbliss batter and pitcher of the week for the week ending 8/24, the league announced Monday.

Sermo was the lead run producer in the league by a wide margin, driving in 15 runs by hitting .478 (11-for-23) with two doubles and three home runs. He also walked twice and scored five runs.

His best game was on Saturday night in Chicago when he drove in six with a homer and a double in Fargo-Moorhead’s dominant 17-1 victory, their lone win of the three-game set against the Dogs.

One of the best players in league history, this is Sermo’s first season with Fargo-Moorhead, his 6th team he’s played for in the league. In 48 games in Fargo he’s got his batting average up to .260 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI.

On the pitching side, Chris Mazza had himself a week, going 11.1 shutout innings across two starts.

In Milwaukee on Tuesday night, Mazza went four shutout innings, allowing just one hit but walking five in what ended up being a 2-1 loss for the Cougars.

On Sunday though, he helped the Cougars finish a huge sweep on the road in Lake Country, pitching 7.1 shutout frames with just two hits allowed and five strikeouts while not walking a batter.

The former major leaguer with the Mets, Red Sox and Rays has had a nice season with Kane County with a 4-6 record and 3.89 ERA in 15 starts across 76.1 innings pitched.

Carbliss is the founding partner of the American Association.
