SCHMIT BLASTS WALK-OFF HOME RUN FOR CANARIES

Sioux Falls 2, Gary SouthShore 1 — Box Score

With SS Blake Schmit’s solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Sioux Falls Canaries walked off on the Gary SouthShore RailCats 2-1.

The Canaries scored first in the game with an RBI single from LF Burt Reynolds in the bottom of the sixth inning that scored 3B Tyler Wolfe. But in the seventh, the RailCats tied the score as SS Ryan Fitzgerald hit a lead-off double and scored after 2B Andy DeJesus singled and took second on an error. In the bottom of the ninth, both of the first two batters were retired and Schmit was down to his final strike before ending the game with his fourth home run of the year.

No batter in the game had multiple hits in the game – six different RailCats and four different Canaries each recorded one. The RailCats’ starting pitcher Dan Minor had a career-high 12 strikeouts in the no decision.

 

Sioux City 6, Kansas City 5 — Box Score

Riding the strength of a solid start, the Sioux City Explorers held off a late push from the Kansas City T-Bones 6-5.

The Explorers plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning and after CF Cedric Hunter, who went 4-for-5, hit a solo home run for the T-Bones in the top of the third, DH LeVon Washington did the same for Sioux City in the bottom of the frame. In the fifth, Washington added to his RBI total with a double that scored both LF Jayce Ray and 1B Tyler Ogle. Washington scored later in the inning on an error for his third run of the night.

LF Kyle Petty scored when RF Chantz Mack singled in the sixth and 2B Marcus Lemon hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to draw within one run but that would be the final run of the game.

 

Texas 6, Salina 1 — Box Score

The Texas AirHogs opened the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and led the whole way to a 6-1 win against the Salina Stockade.

DH Levi Scott, who went 3-for-5 in the game with two doubles, kicked started things with an RBI triple in the first and then scored when RF Denis Phipps lifted a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat. CF Trevor Sealey also had three hits in the game with a double and an RBI. Both 2B Alvaro Rondon and Phipps recorded a pair of hits. LF Charley Thurber had a team-high two RBI.

For the Stockade, RF Jimmy Heck had the team’s lone RBI with a single in the top of the fifth that scored C Cody Coffman, who was 2-for-4. Starting pitcher Calvin Drummond (6-3) picked up the win for seven innings on the bump where he allowed one run on four hits while striking out five batters.

 

Fargo-Moorhead 7, Lincoln 0 – Game 1/7 Innings — Box Score

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks’ starting pitcher Tyler Alexander broke the league record for strikeouts in a season and picked up a shutout win as his team beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 7-0 in the first game of a double header.

Alexander (7-6) recorded 10 strikeouts in the seven-inning game to give him 159 on the year. He gave up four hits in the game but did not issue a walk. Offensively, the RedHawks racked up 10 hits including three from CF Devan Ahart. Ahart hit his 19^th double of the year and added two RBI and two runs scored. Both LF Kheury De La Cruz and RF K.D. Kang hit home runs for the RedHawks as well.

For Lincoln, four different batters each had one hits including 1B Curt Smith, who hit a double.

 

Lincoln 7, Fargo-Moorhead 1 – Game 2/7 Innings — Box Score

The Lincoln Saltdogs responded to the game one loss with a 7-1 win in game two of their double header with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

Both teams plated a run in the second inning but the Saltdogs took control in the sixth inning with a five-run rally. Three of those runs came when 1B Nathaniel Maggio belted a three-run home run, his seventh of the season. Lincoln added another run in the top of the seventh as OF Brandon Jacobs singled with the bases loaded to score RF Juan Martinez. The RedHawks only run of the game came as C Charlie Valerio tripled and then scored on a wild pitch.

For the game, both 2B Cesar Valera and Jacobs had two hits in the game while Maggio had four RBI. For the RedHawks, Valerio and DH Chris Grayson had the team’s only two hits.
