SALAMIDA, SMALL BALL HELP GOLDEYES

Salamida

August 6 Night Recap

Box Scores

Winnipeg 3, Sioux City 1

Winnipeg southpaw Chris Salamida (pictured, 2-0) looked destined for a tough-luck loss, with the Goldeyes trailing 1-0 into the seventh inning, but the Goldeyes’ bats picked Salamida up with a late rally to win, 3-1. Salamida pitched seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out four.

Sioux City took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when 2B Anthony Kaskadden singled home LF Sam Judah.

The Winnipeg bats came alive in the seventh, as the team loaded the bases without surrendering an out. 2B Kevin Moesquit drove a deep fly to center field to tie the game on a sac fly, and CF Tyler Graham delivered the go-ahead RBI with a bunt single placed perfectly between the Explorers’ first baseman and pitcher.

In the eighth, C Luis Alen added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to center field, and closer Patrick Keating cruised in the ninth, retiring the side with just seven pitches for his 14th save.

Kansas City 4, Gary SouthShore 1

Right-hander Lucas Irvine (6-4) won his fourth game in his last five starts, throwing 7 1/3 innings of five-hit ball to lead Kansas City to a 4-1 win. Irvine struck out eight batters and kept the RailCats off the basepaths by surrendering zero walks.

The top four batters in the T-Bones’ lineup accounted for the majority of the team’s offense, with each batter No. 1-4 collecting two hits. 2B Jairo Perez drove in the game’s first run in the first inning with an RBI single and added an RBI double in the fifth. The T-Bones also scored two runs in the second inning on RBI singles from 3B Justin Bass and 1B Matt Padgett.

Kansas City closer Chad Robinson notched his sixth save with a scoreless ninth.

Lincoln 9, Sioux Falls 5

A three-run homer from 1B Ian Gac gave the Saltdogs plenty of momentum, as Lincoln beat Sioux Falls, 9-5. Saltdogs’ C Tyler Goodro added an RBI single later in the first to complete a four-run inning.

The Canaries cut Lincoln’s lead in half with a run in both the third and fourth innings, but the Saltdogs responded with four runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The four runs came on two passed balls and two RBI singles. Lincoln LF Matt Forgatch added a seventh-inning solo homer to make it 9-2, giving the Saltdogs plenty of cushion to survive Sioux Falls’ three-run rally in the eighth.

Lincoln RHP Pete Parise (9-5) made the most of his run support, allowing one earned run on seven hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Sioux Falls starter Mitchell Clegg (4-5) allowed two earned runs in just 2/3 of an inning before he left the game after being hit with a line drive, forcing the Canaries to turn to their bullpen, which allowed three earned runs, and two unearned runs, in the remaining 8 1/3 innings.

Canaries’ 1B Marcos Rodriguez and RF Reggie Abercrombie each had three hits in the loss. Rodriguez hit a fourth-inning solo homer and Abercrombie stole two bases.

Grand Prairie 3, Amarillo 2 (12 innings)

Five AirHogs’ relievers kept Grand Prairie in the game until the 12th inning, when AirHogs’ 3B Brandon Pinckney had the connected in the clutch, hitting a two-out, walk-off RBI single to end the game. It was Pinckney’s first hit of the night in his sixth at-bat.

After left-hander Gabriel Garcia started the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, the Grand Prairie bullpen came up big, keeping the Sox hitless through the game’s final 6 2/3 innings. AirHogs’ lefty Boomer Potts (2-0) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless top of the 12th.

Grand Prairie’s first two batters in the bottom of the 12th recorded outs, but SS Yasutsugu Nishimoto kept the inning going with a walk. After two ensuing singles, Nishimoto came around to score the game-winning run.

AirHogs’ 1B Andres Rodriguez led the team with two hits, including a first-inning RBI single. Sox’ CF Jason Martin accounted for one of Amarillo’s two runs with a fourth-inning solo homer.

El Paso 6, Laredo 4

El Paso and Laredo came out swinging Tuesday night, combining for ten runs in the game’s first three innings before the bats went silent for the final six innings in a 6-4 El Paso win.

El Paso scored in the top of the first on an error, but its lead was short-lived. Laredo 1B Balbino Fuenmayor smacked a two-RBI double to left field and scored on the play because of a two-base error, giving the Lemurs a 3-1 lead.

In the second, the Diablos tied the score at three with a two-RBI double from 2B Jose Garcia, who batted 3-for-5 in the game, but again Laredo answered, this time on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second that scored 2B Mike Provencher.

Diablos’ LF Oscar Mesa delivered the deciding blow in the top of the third with a three-run homer — his first round-tripper of the season.

Right-hander Santo Hernandez (2-0) won his second straight start, allowing three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings while striking out seven. The Diablos’ relievers shut down Laredo for the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit. Closer Marshall Shuler notched his eighth save with a scoreless ninth.

Fargo-Moorhead 10, St. Paul 9

A walk-off single from RedHawks’ RF Jeremiah Piepkorn capped Fargo-Moorhead’s ninth-inning comeback, after St. Paul had led 9-8.

Fargo-Moorhead 1B Keith Brachold tied the game earlier in the bottom of the ninth with a one-out single that scored CF Nic Jackson.

Brachold led the RedHawks with a 4-for-5 day at the plate. He scored three runs and drove in three RBI. DH Tim Alberts went 3-for-5, on two doubles and a triple, with two RBI.

St. Paul had taken a 9-8 lead in the top of the sixth on a two-run homer from DH Brandon Tripp, who had two hits in the game. Saints’ C Dwight Childs also homered.

RedHawks’ right-hander Mackenzie King (3-1) pitched well in relief to get the win, hurling five innings of two-run ball. He allowed three hits and two walks and struck out three.

Shields has one three of his last four starts.
