RAILCATS TO CONTEND FOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Coombs

2013 Semifinals: Game Four

Box Score

Gary SouthShore 3, Fargo-Moorhead 0

The results are in and Gary SouthShore will meet Wichita on Tuesday night in the American Association Championship Series. With a stellar outing by starting pitcher Morgan Coombs (pictured), the RailCats defeated Fargo-Moorhead, 3-0. Gary SouthShore won the best-of-five series, 3-1, moving the club one step closer to securing its first American Association title.

Coombs struck out eight Fargo-Moorhead batters in seven shutout innings to help send the RailCats to a semifinals series victory. The right-hander only allowed five hits and walked a pair in the victorious effort.

Gary SouthShore’s offense gave Coombs some early run support, as the RailCats scored in the first inning for the third consecutive game. Mike Massaro, the league leader in triples during the regular season, drove his first three-bagger of the postseason to open the scoring in the first. Later in the inning, Massaro came home on an error to give Gary SouthShore a 2-0 lead. The RailCats tacked on another run in the fifth on a Reid Fronk single and the pitching took care of the rest.

Estevan Uriegas and Ian Durham finished what Coombs started on the hill. Uriegas took over after Coombs gave up a leadoff single in the eighth. But, the left-hander got Gary SouthShore out of potential trouble with a strikeout and a double play. Then, Durham emphatically put a close to the series by striking out the side on the ninth.

With the victory the RailCats are headed to their first American Association Championship Series in their first playoff appearance in the league. Game one is scheduled for Tuesday at Gary SouthShore.
